Cement pie

It's been known for some time that the red Wii that just hit the streets in Europe would come with a copy of something called Donkey Kong: Original Edition (as well as copies of New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Wii Sports).

What wasn't known until a few days ago (yeah, I'm a bit late to the party on this one) is that Donkey Kong: Original Edition isn't, as some in the gaming press assumed, the arcade version of this Nintendo classic. It also isn't the Famicom/NES version.

Rather, it seems to be a combination of the two--or, more specifically, it seems to be the Famicom/NES version updated to include the arcade version's cement/pie factory level. (This version also re-introduces the animation that shows the titular ape picking up Pauline and taking her to the next stage.)

Here's a fairly horrible video of the whole thing in action:

Skip to the 58-second mark to see the previously absent (in the Famicom/NES version) animation and skip to 1:05 to see the cement/pie factory stage.

  1. Hm. Well, that's sort of a letdown.

  2. I actually think it's kind of cool. The main complaint levied against the NES version of the game was that it lacked the cement/pie level, so there's little reason to hate on it anymore. Plus, I like that this version is kind of a hybrid as a result.

That said, I wouldn't complain if Nintendo *finally* put the arcade version of DK (and some of their other arcade games, too) on the Virtual Console.

  3. That would be nice. I just saw a commercial for the anniversary edition of Super Mario All Stars...and I'm sort of amazed that they left Super Mario World off of it. I never had it on my original cart, but everyone else I knew did. It's strange to me...

  4. Oh, I'm not amazed that SMW isn't on it, Justin. Why? Because it's available for sale on the Virtual Console!

The only reason I'd buy the special edition at this point is to have it as a collectible.

  5. That's how I feel, too, actually. I want the CD and the book that come with it, but other than that...meh.

  6. The sad thing is that I'd totally pay $50-60 for this if Nintendo had remade SMB 1, 2 and 3 using the New SMB Wii engine. As it is, I'll probably pass on it...

  7. Oh I'll agree with you wholeheartedly on that one. Oh my gosh...can you imagine blasting through SMB2 with all four characters?! I'd pay $30 for EACH if they did that...

  8. That's the problem, Justin -- I *can* imagine it :( Maybe they'll do something like that on their next console...
