PC Engine Punch-Out!!

Wouldn't it be great if someone created a "console wars"-themed boxing game? (Don't worry, you can disagree with me.) I'd especially like it if such a game allowed players to choose handhelds as well as consoles as their pixelated--or polygonal--pugilists.

Although I'd probably pick underdogs--the PC Engine, Saturn and Dreamcast, especially--most of the time, every once in a while I'd pick the tank-like NES, which in my mind would play a bit like King Hippo.

  1. Hmmm...I think I'd pick the original Game Boy. It's beefy and agile at the same time.

  2. Oh, yeah, the GameBoy would be a great choice!

  3. The PC Engine would be a good choice. What it lacks in size it could make up for in speed and agility. b

  4. Yes, exactly! The NES and Saturn would be slow and lumbering, of course. How would the Genesis/Mega Drive and Super Fami/SNES play?

  5. The Genesis would be an all-around powerhouse, one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the game.

The SNES would be as slow-footed as they come.

And then there's the N64, tragically overconfident but capable of dealing an incredible knock-out punch at any given time.

  6. Ha! That *almost* sounds right to me, IvaNEC. Surely the SNES would have some positive traits, too, but I can't think of what they would be in boxing terms at the moment...

  7. The SNES would have stamina like you wouldn't believe. What with all the hours and hours of AWESOME RPGs the system has, it's used to running for days at a time.

  8. OK, so the SNES would be a bit sluggish overall but also have a lot of stamina. Also, it would have to have some kind of twirling/whirling special attack/punch -- you know, to coincide with the system's Mode 7 powers :)

  9. LOL Absolutely. Or at least some kind of disorienting status effect.

  10. Yes, that's exactly what I mean.

Man, someone with some design/programming talent really has to make a game like this someday :)
