Forget Dorothy, I'm a 'friend of Tony'

You've all heard "friend of Dorothy," right? If not, it's a phrase that entered the English lexicon around World War II and has been used ever since as a euphemism for "gay man."

I bring it up because it relates to the Xbox Live gamertag I created shortly after receiving my spiffy new Xbox Live Arcade (and Indie Games) player, er, Xbox 360.

Initially, I wanted my gamertag to be "thegaygamer," but of course that was taken. My next idea was "gay4play," which was taken, too--although "gayforplay" was available. I didn't go with it, though, because I was worried it would be deemed inappropriate and thus banned by the powers that be at Microsoft.

So, I hit my creativity button (it's located on the inside of my right knee, by the way) and came up with "friendoftony"--which combines "friend of Dorothy" with one of my all-time favorite gay game characters, Tony (above) from EarthBound.

Unfortunately, I don't currently have an Xbox Live Gold subscription, so I can't play any of you on line, but that doesn't mean we can't connect. If you're interested, just send a friend request to me at "friendoftony."

    Yes, send me a request tomorrow, Drunken Lemur! I'll accept it the next time I go on to play Pac-Man CE :)

    Also, I'd love to play Portal 2 with you sometime. Of course, I'll have to get Portal 2 AND a Gold subscription first. I'll let you know when that happens!

    Nice username :). I don't have Gold either, which always astonishes my friends, but I'll be sure to add you for now regardless. Thinking about Xbox Live reminds met hat I wanna change my name on there at some point... but it costs a few bucks, right?

    Thanks to this post I finally understand why Tobias Fünke in Arrested development calls himself Dorothy when he's in jail and why White Power Bill calls himself "a friend of Dorothy".

    And "friend of tony" has most of "FRIENDs OF DOROThY". Only "s" and "h" are missing.

    Nice! Oh, Tony...he made my gaydar ping a long, long time before I even knew what gaydar was. It just seemed like he was way too attached to Jeff. *sigh* That was the one part of that game I used to look forward to a lot. :-) Big surprise. Well, I approve of any gamer tag that references Earthbound.

    Justin: Yeah, my gaydar went off with Tony, too. I was so happy to read a few years ago that Itoi admitted Tony's gayness :)
