Finally, a portable Space Channel 5 player!

Space Channel 5 isn't the only game I'd play on a portable Dreamcast; I'd also play ChuChu Rocket!, Jet Grind Radio and Shenmue, among others.

Of course, that would require both the existence and purchase of such a system.

Surprisingly, the former point of contention is about to be taken care of thanks to ... some company that isn't Sega. Said company's portable Dreamcast (below) will be sold via pachimon.tv beginning next month. The system's price tag: ¥38,000 (about $470).

As much as I'd love to play Space Channel 5 and ChuChu Rocket! during my next flight or road trip, I think I'll hang on to my hard-earned money and play games on my DS instead.

  1. Haha, I just played Space Channel 5 minutes ago. :D A portable dreamcast sounds sweet indeed, but the price tag does not.

  2. Hey there, Linnea! Yeah, the price tag definitely is not sweet, esp. when you consider this isn't an official release.

  3. I would totally buy this.

  4. Why don't you buy one and then tell the rest of us if it's worth it, Zigfried? :)

  5. I love the text... "Super rare! Portable Dreamcast"

I guess since it's super rare they can get away with charging that much? Yeesh! :\

  6. Anne: I have a feeling they're trying to pass it off as rare so that they can get away with charging that much :)

  7. It looks very nice, and I love portable gaming and all, but yeah, I think I'll be passing on this as well. We may end up getting some Dreamcast classics ported over to the 3DS or the next PSP anyway, so I'd feel kind of bad about spending this kind of money if that happened!

In terms of rare, expensive Dreamcasts, I'd rather get this pink Sakura Taisen set instead: http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i419/Kamiwoo/DSC02129.jpg

  9. Nice piece of kit but I think I'll stick to home Dreamcast gaming! :P

  10. I wasn't being serious about wanting it, Kamiwoo, though I do think it's kind of cool. If I was going to blow that kind of money (or more) it would be for a PC Engine LT and nothing else!

BTW, that Sakura Taisen DC is pretty cool! You should get it :)

  11. Simon: Yeah, I agree. Home DC gaming is much cheaper -- and probably more enjoyable, too :)

  12. That's really cool! But....call me when there's a portable NES.

  13. Actually, Justin, there *are* portably NESes! Not official ones, of course, but they do exist. Let me look for a link to one that has been recommended to me...

  14. It does look cool but that price? You could easily buy 10 regular Dreamcasts for that much. If you wanted to. They must be mad!

  15. Sean: Yeah, they're clearly trying to appeal to DC freaks. I could see spending $500 on such a thing back when the DC was new-ish, but now? No thanks. Plus, it's not even official. Next!

  16. Justin: Here's the system that someone on Twitter pointed out to me. It's supposed to be pretty nice -- http://www.amazon.com/Hyperkin-Portable-System-Wireless-Controllers/dp/B004H7KXAY
