I'm totally buying this 3DS eShop game on Sept. 27 despite its rather terrible name

The game I'm talking about in the header above, by the way, is THE "DENPA" MEN: They Came By Wave.

As for why I'll be buying it despite its cringe-worthy name: It's the North American localization of Genius Sonority's Denpa Ningen RPG, a Japanese eShop release I've mentioned here on quite a few occasions.

Anyway, even if you've never read any of my drool-filled, Denpa Ningen RPG-focused posts, you'll probably want to check out the following trailer for THE "DENPA" MEN, as I think it looks pretty cool:

As mentioned in this post's headline, THE "DENPA" MEN will hit the North American eShop on Sept. 27. Oh, and it'll set you back $6.99.

  1. This looks so good. Depending on the reviews, this may be the game that convinces me to stop waiting and get a 3DS.

  2. Really warp? I'm surprised this could be the game that pushes you over the edge. Why is that, BTW? Do you like that it's a portable RPG, or is it something else?

Also, I didn't know that you don't yet have a 3DS! What's kept you from jumping aboard so far?

  3. Yes I'm a big JRPG guy, and it usually takes awhile before a handheld starts getting any decent ones. The only other ones coming that I can think of are Fire Emblem (yawn), Paper Mario (when???), and Code of Princess (praying it's not 2D Monster Hunter). The art style, originality and general wackiness of this one put it ahead of all the others. I guess my only concern is -- how can this be a real RPG for only $7? Does that mean there's going to be lots of DLC or what?

  4. Ah, that makes sense. I'm surprised you find Fire Emblem to be yawn-worthy, though. I'm excited for that one!

As for Paper Mario: It'll be out in mid-November (Nov. 11) here in the US. I don't think it has a Euro release date yet, though.

Code of Princess isn't really an RPG, by the way -- or at least I've never seen it described as such. It's more of a side-scrolling action game with some RPG elements included in it, as far as I know.

Oh, and I can't imagine this is a full-fledged RPG. I'm expecting it to be 10-hour or so RPG that has some replay value.

Don't quote me on the 10-hour thing, though -- I've never heard anyone say how long the game is. I'm just guessing!

  5. I played the first Fire Emblem GBA game that came out here, and I just thought it was super-dry standard high fantasy. And it seems like there's been 100 of them since, all pretty much the same. I get more excited for a game that's trying to do something different, or at least has an interesting style to it. At least the new one isn't butt-ugly like the GBA ones, and they made perma-death optional finally, so I'll probably give it a chance at some point.

It's kind of hard for me to comprehend what a 10-hour RPG would even be like, but it won't keep me away.

  6. I can understand not liking the style of the GBA Fire Emblems. Honestly, that's what has kept me from giving them a try. I really like the art style used in the 3DS game, though, which is why I'm planning to pick it up as soon as it's released here.

As for The 'Denpa' Men: Like I said, don't quote me on the 10-hour comment. I honestly have no idea how long it's supposed to take to clear. I can't imagine it's a 40-hour RPG, though. If that were the case, they would have released it on cart, IMO.

  7. BTW, warp, you may have already seen this, but if not, you might want to read this gamer's impressions of the Japanese version:

He/she doesn't say how long the game is, or if they dungeons are randomly generated or finite in number, but I've asked for clarification and will report back as soon as I know more :)

  8. Huh, I didn't know Genius Senority had made a 3DS game. I liked there Pokemon games on GCN well enough so this might be cool. Looks pretty charming as well.

  9. Yep, it's definitely a Genius Sonority-made game, chaosyoshimage! In fact, I believe they're the ones publishing it here in the US. Anyway, it does look charming, doesn't it? That's the main reason I've wanted to buy/play it since the Japanese original was announced. Well, that and the fact that it's a turn-based RPG :)

  10. Finally! A release-date for America! Maybe we will get a release for Europe soon too!
    Ohhh I'm so excited! xD
    Great, great, great!:3
BTW: the europe-release of Code of Princess is a sure thing now!
Agatsuma Entertainment only needs to find an european-publisher! I'm soooo happy about that. °u°

  11. Hello Melody! I have to imagine you guys/gals will get it, too -- or at least that's what I'm hoping. Regardless, I'm very much looking forward to it. Hopefully HarmoKnight will be announced soon, too!

  12. Yes PLEASE!!! I need HarmoKnight so bad O______O
If they don't release this game in Europe I have to move to America.

  13. Melody: I'm looking forward to HarmoKnight even more than I'm looking forward to The 'Denpa' Men, if you can believe it. I think you'll get both of them, by the way -- for what it's worth.

  14. warp: Here's another small bit of info about the game, in case you're interested -- http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=42132692&postcount=18

  15. I'm so excited for this release, as well! Now we can finally talk about it! Between Tokyo Jungle and this, I'm going to be very busy at the end of the month ;)

Bryan, you already know this, but for you and anyone else who's interested, I know the translator of Denpa Men personally. He can be reached @zolbrod on Twitter, and if you want to ask him questions about the length of the game, etc., I'm sure he'd be happy to answer (within reason, I'm sure there's some things he's not supposed to reveal!)

  16. Anne! Do you know that I've been meaning to ask you about this for ages (who's bringing it to the States and when), but I didn't do so (even privately) because I thought it would be inappropriate?

BTW, I didn't realize Tokyo Jungle was coming out at the end of this month. I'm so out of the loop! Anyway, I look forward to hearing your thoughts on that one.

Thanks for passing along the name of the translator of The 'Denpa' Men, by the way. I may have to hit him up on Twitter in a few minutes. I'd love to know how long this game is supposed to be!

  17. I need this. This looks brilliant. I was excited about it before, but after seeing this...wow. NEED.

  18. That's great, Justin! Hopefully we both like it considering how excited we are for it :) Also, hopefully it sells enough for Genius Sonority or Nintendo to bring the sequel to the US, too.

  19. Don't ever feel worried about asking things in public or private, Bryan! If I can't answer, I'll just say so. In this case I knew just about the same as you did – apparently the fact that it was being localized got leaked, and Genius Sonority wanted to put a quick lid on it, as they had their own plans as to when they were going to do a reveal. Tim did approach me personally saying he worked on it, but he was very good about not revealing any release date or other information ;)

  20. Thanks, Anne! I wonder why they wanted to keep a lid on it -- especially since they're hardly screaming about it from the rooftops even now. Oh, well, I'm just glad we're getting it. Can't wait to catch some 'Denpa' Men around Seattle :)
