These Japanese Super Mario 3D World commercials make me feel all tingly

I know there are a lot of gamers in the world who no longer care about Mario or his pixelated or polygonal exploits--if they ever cared about them in the first place.

I am not one of those people.

Now, I'm also not one of those people who snap up each and every game that features Nintendo's iconic protagonist.

For the most part, I stick to the company's Paper Mario series (although that'll no longer be the case if its next entry is as disappointing as the last two), some of its two-dimensional Mario Bros. releases and its three-dimensional Mario games.

That last group is the one that interests me most these days--mainly because, with the possible exception of Super Mario Sunshine (which I like in theory, but not in practice), Nintendo has yet to produce a 3D Mario game that fails to at least compete with (if not top) the ones that came before it.

When it was first announced, I actually thought Super Mario 3D World might join its GameCube counterpart at the bottom of Nintendo's Mario-branded barrel. I mean, that first trailer the company showed to the world during this year's E3 event was the definition of "ho hum," wasn't it?

Thankfully, subsequent trailers have washed that taste from my mouth. Not only that, but they've transformed the game from something I consider only mildly intriguing (if that) to something I now view as a must-purchase release.

Although the commercials included above aren't exactly trailers, they still provide a smile-inducing glimpse at why this game has caught the attention of a lot of folks in the few weeks and months.

Before you watch either of them, though, I have to warn you that they likely include spoilers.

Anyway, are any of you finding yourselves similarly attracted to Super Mario 3D World? If so, what aspects appeal to you most right now?

  1. Nov. 22 is going to be hell for my gaming budget. Super Mario 3D World, A Link Between Worlds, and Tearaway on the Vita.
The main appeal to me is the new Mario game is going back to that Mario 2 character roster. I was sold on the game as soon as they said I could play as Peach and float around again.

  2. It's going to be a fine day for me, Terry, as I'm not buying any of those games on that particular day, although I am planning to get SM3DW and ALBW sometime between my birthday and the start of 2014.

That said, I understand your fears for your gaming budget :)

Also, I agree with you 100 percent RE: the SMB2 character roster. I'll probably use Peach to get me through the entire game during my first playthrough.

Speaking Peach: did you see her using/wearing a Tanooki Suit in one of these commercials? Squeeeeeee!!!

You know I'm excited for it! Every time I see another clip I see more crazy obstacles that I can't wait to run around through. The moment I knew we were in for something special was the trailer that revealed Bowser's purple car--there's so much more going on in the game than they were letting on at first!

  4. Realistically, I'm going to buy the Zelda game that weekend and put the other two down as possible Christmas gifts from my family. Then I'll spend the next month saying "Why did I do that? I could be playing them NOW." lol

  5. Ha ha! I hear ya, Terry. I know I'm going to feel that way about SM3DW especially. Although, really, I can't afford to buy both a Wii U and SM3DW at the moment, so I shouldn't whine too much. Anyway, hopefully my parents can come through with the Wii U for Christmas. If not, going to have to buy it myself!

  6. It is looking amazing, isn't it, Drew? Like I said earlier, I'm especially excited about being able to control Peach again--and float to my heart's content :)

  7. Yes, I agree, Michael--every time we see more gameplay of this one, it looks better than it did before! It's going to be interesting to see if this game finally helps the Wii U's fortunes in the US this holiday season. (I don't think it'll make a tremendous difference in Japan and Europe, sadly.)

I like how in the beginning of the first one it looks they're looking up peach's skirt and then they look away looking somewhat shocked.

I also plan to go through my first play through with Princess Peach.

  9. I was disappointed with Mario U, it really did feel like a HD rehash of NSMB. Had no regrets trading it in (got Mario & Luigi Dream Team with it).

But seeing the stuff on 3D World - yea I'm pretty keen to give it a go! Also, I really liked 3D Land on 3DS.
I'm glad that 3D World does not feel like a rehash. It's great to see multiple "power ups" and who can't resist kitty Luig? :p

  10. Yay! Another Peach fan :) Seriously, I *still* get a kick of floating through stages using Peach in SMB2...

  11. Hey there, Igor. Well, I'm guessing a lot of that--feeling like NSMBU was just another rehash of the original NSMB--comes from Nintendo using the same art style in all of the games.

I'm still looking forward to playing it at some point, as I loved NSMBW, but I also hope they try something new for their next console/handheld.

As for Super Mario 3D World: yes, I think it's safe to say you won't be able to call this one a rehash. It looks like it was inspired by 3D Land and even Galaxy, yes, but it also seems to go off in its own direction.

Finally, although I like kitty Luigi, for me, Tanooki Peach is where it's at!

I'm thrilled. Everything I see about this game makes me giddy. I actually really liked NSMBU, though. I thought it was well designed and fun. Sure, it was more of the same, but so fucking what. More of a good thing is good.

I got to try the game at NYCC. It's crazy and fun in groups. It feels like it's going to be a big step up from 3D Land.

  14. I'll have to convince my one game-playing friend to pop over sometime and play this with me. Otherwise, I'll be all alone. Oh, well, surely it'll still be pretty fun solo?
