I'm pretty smitten with this pair of Splatoon (Wii U) commercials

I honestly don't know what's come over me in the last few weeks. In that time, I've become massively smitten with Nintendo's cartoonish and squid-filled shooter for the Wii U, Splatoon.

Admittedly, I won't be playing it anytime soon--due to the fact that I still don't own the company's latest system--but that won't keep me from slobbering over it all the same.

Actually, for the time being, I'm going to slobber over the commercials shown here, which the brass at Nintendo hope will spur throngs of people to buy their shiny new game.

The one above is, or will be, airing in Japan, while the one below will be shown in North America.

Although I'm overly fond of both of them, I think I prefer the Japanese ad to its North American counterpart. That said, I can understand why Nintendo isn't using it in every region, as it's perhaps too abstract (because it doesn't give viewers much of an idea as to Splatoon's gameplay).

What do you think? Do you like either of these commercials, or maybe even both of them? Also, are you as smitten by this upcoming Wii U title as I am at the moment?

Thank you for these awesome pics!
Is there a way you could also take the first 10 pages of the manual?

I am really interested in this since I want to do a faithful reproduction of the manual along with an english translation of it for reproduction cartridges of MOTHER hacks.

    Thanks in advance!

I'm so hyped for this game. Literally counting down the days until it's release. :3

Would Splatoon be the reason you'd purchase a Wii U, Bryan?

  3. It would be one of many reasons, Adam. That's actually the problem--I want too many Wii U games at the moment, and not enough money or time to buy or play all of them :(

  4. I agree with pretty much everything you've said here, Michael. My only "fear" regarding the NA marketing for this game is that, as usual, NOA seems to be aiming it squarely at young children. There's nothing necessarily wrong with that, especially if NOA has access to stats and other info that suggests young children make up the bulk of their market these days, but I also wish Nintendo would try to market to other demographics now and then. Aside from that, though, I love the looks of this game and its TV ads, too. I understand and agree with your concerns--well, except for the one about no voice chat, which I wouldn't use even if it were allowed--but even then I think the game is awfully intriguing at the moment...

  5. Unfortunately, ShadowOne333, scanning the entire manual isn't possible, as it's not really a "manual" in the usual sense. Rather, it's a huge piece of paper that's folded up into a manual-like size. As a result, I would have to scan it bit by bit and then piece everything together if I wanted to share the whole thing here, which to be honest isn't very appealing to me. If ever I'm given the opportunity to scan the entire thing on some huge, flatbed scanner, though, rest assured I'll do it and then share the resulting product here.

Oh yeah I'm aware it is some sort of folded flier. It doesn't matter if it is done bit by bit, I can put it all together. :P

Even a close pic to each page would be sufficient since I only need to see the details of the page and be able to visualize the japanese characters to start the translation.

Either way, I thank you for taking your time to reply back to me.
Thank you so much! And hope you can someday upload the whole thing even it is pixel by pixel. :P

After playing the testfire, I can't wait for Splatoon to launch. It was really good!

One thing I find interesting (and a nice change of pace) about the marketing for this game is that the promotional material tend to focus on a female character more often than a male one. You don't see that a lot for games with custom player characters and when you do it's usually for a MMO where the female armor design is skimpy.

  9. Ah, I hadn't even thought of that, Sam. Good thinking ^^

  12. The testfire demo was fun and my nephews loved it, so I'm looking forward to buying the full game. I pre-ordered the Inkling Boy Amiibo, but I'm starting to wish I'd ordered the three-pack. Guess I'll be watching for restocks. lol

  15. According to retail analysts 25 to 40-year-olds make up the bulk of their market & outspend the children. They're selling nostalgia. Minecraft & CoD has the under 25 crowd in a stranglehold.

  16. I'm really curious from a business standpoint. Will it sell well, to whom, and how does it compare in the long run (evergreen sales or huge drop off)?

I was interested in the game but the usual issues popped up; the Nintendo internet infrastructure, focus on couch multiplayer, no party chat, & Nintendo doesn't have a matchmaking system in place. I'm going to wait for bargain prices or for Devil's 3rd.

I'm glad Nintendo fans seem to actually want to give it a chance. I hope they actually do show up for the sales unlike the usual situation.

  18. I don't doubt that this is true, Chief.

  19. It certainly seems to have struck a chord with a certain segment
of the North American gaming population, Chief, although it remains to be seen if we’re just talking about the hardcore Wii U owners who also showed a lot of interest in games like Wonderful 101 but otherwise failed to “move the needle” in any significant way or if we’re talking about a wider range consumers.

I have a feeling we’re just talking about the “hardcore Wii U” set here, but of course I’d love to be proven wrong.

Personally, I’d give it a try simply because I like its aesthetics—if
    I owned a Wii U, I mean. Since I don’t, though, I’ll just continue to slobber
over its official art, screenshots and the like.

  20. There's no need, Chief. I believe you!

  21. Analysts are only as good as their information. I'm sure Nintendo knows and has a reason for the marketing decisions they make.

Side note: The marketing for children actually works on me. Disney, Nintendo, & Pixar tickle that fancy so I end up buying their stuff.
