Surprise, surprise: Nintendo slipped Twinkle Star Sprites onto the Virtual Console late last week

Unfortunately for many of us, the company only slipped the game onto the Japanese Virtual Console.

Does this mean ADK's shooter-slash-puzzler, which began life as a Neo Geo title before being ported to the Saturn and Dreamcast, will soon be slipped onto the Virtual Console in other regions, too? I sure hope so.

If the possibility of playing Twinkle Star Sprites on your Wii doesn't excite you, may I suggest acquainting yourself with the video above, which shows off a good portion of the game's Dreamcast port?

BAH! I had a comment...but the Internet ate it. And it took so long to eat it that I don't remember what I'd said...something to the effect of it being cute and not understanding why it's a puzzle game.

Oh, that sucks, Justin. Sorry about that. As for why the game is a puzzler: Really, I'd say the game is 25 percent shmup/shoot 'em up and 75 percent puzzler, with the puzzler part feeling a bit like a Puyo Puyo game.

Shooting the enemies that rain down on your side of the screen causes bullets (and additional enemies, I think) to rain down on your opponent's side of the screen. Of course, the opposite can and will happen to you, too. When it does, you can shoot your opponent's bullets to cause even more problems for your opponents.

That's just the basics, though. You also can create combos and such that create even more mayhem for your opponents (and, of course, they can create the same mayhem for you).

You should give it a try sometime via emulation, Justin. There are some good Neo Geo emulators out there that should allow you to play this quite easily.

Makes more sense now. It's kind of a competitive shooter, then? What an interesting idea! I guess in watching the video I didn't put that together...I'm slow today.

Yes, competitive shooter sounds good to me. I wish I could find a video of the game's intro -- it explains everything much better than I can, I'm sure. All you really need to know, though, is that it's fun and unique :)
