Get that second pair of underwear ready, folks: Shinrei Camera is coming to the States on April 13

As anyone who has owned a Wii should be well aware, Nintendo isn't the greatest at localizing its Japanese games for the North American market these days.

As such, I fully expected the company's recently released, Fatal Frame-ish collaboration with Tecmo Koei Games, Shinrei Camera: Tsuiteru Techou, to remain a Japan-only affair.

Imagine my surprise, then, when I read that Nintendo of America is bringing this scary 3DS game to the States--as Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir--on Friday, April 13.

Nintendo of America's PR folks failed to mention the game's price in the press release they sent around yesterday morning, but it's a pretty sure bet they'll charge $29.99 for it. (The Japanese version costs ¥3,800, while most of the company's games go for ¥4,800.)

For more information on this sure-to-be-spooky 3DS offering, check out its official site.

Ahhh, this is making my wait to get a 3DS worth it. This looks interesting.

Hey there, motherplayer! It does look interesting, doesn't it? I was a bit bummed by it at first, since it doesn't seem to be a full-fledged Fatal Frame game, but it still seems very appealing. Hopefully it'll be given a $29.99 price tag and will appear on Amazon SOON.

Aw, Bryan, how come you don't credit me as a source? Hah, I kid ;)

Anyways, I wrote up a whole piece about this announcement over at VGW, and doing some digging I found something a little disappointing regarding how scary it will potentially be. The Fatal Frame games have always gotten a CERO C in Japan, or recommended for ages 15+, while this one only got a CERO B, which is for ages 12+.

So anyways... Just wondering how scary it can really be with only a 12+ rating? Something to think about. I don't play many horror games but I was under the impression they were generally rated higher than that.

Excited to see more of this one, though!

Aw, sorry, Anne! If I had seen your post at VGW before I wrote this one, I definitely would've mentioned you, too :)

As for the results of your digging: Hmmm, that *does* sound a bit troubling. Still, I've heard a few good comments about the game over at NeoGAF (yes, from folks who've actually played a bit of the game), so I think there's still hope.

Whether or not I get this one will depend on its price, to tell you the truth. If NOA releases it at $39.99, I'll wait until its price is slashed (since you know it won't sell all that well at that price, esp. since NOA is sure to spend as little money and time as possible marketing the game). If they release it at $29.99, though, I'll likely pre-order it.

Right that's it, I'm getting a US 3DS and not a PAL one. Now just to figure out how to get one and the money.

I probably won't be having this game...because having this game would also mean having nightmares. But...SWEET!

WANT!! I'm a die hard survival horror fan and it seems like companies are just making less and less of them.

Well, that's good that people who've played it have positive things to say about it! In my mind, that's all that matters. I was just making an observation as someone who's only read about this title.

I was joking on Twitter about how the day after I purchase Fatal Frame II, this got announced. I must be prophetic! Anyways, I'm glad I bit the bullet and grabbed Fatal Frame II so now I'll have a point of comparison if I end up getting this one.

Retr0gamer: Are you sure this won't be announced for Australian/Euro release? I'm guessing it will, although I guess it could take a while.

What other games have swayed you to buy a 3DS, by the way?

Bryan Ochalla said...

Ha! I understand, Justin. I'm a huge fan of horror movies and games, so I feel like I can't pass this one up ... unless it's too expensive.

Kaze: I'm with you! Even series like RE are less "survival horror" these days than they used to be. Also, let's hope this means a Fatal Frame is being made for the Wii U (and that it, too, will be released in North America).

Anne: Oh, I agree that, based on what you read about it, the game *sounds* as if it could be a letdown. Also, I should admit that the people who've been commenting on the game on NeoGAF haven't exactly commented on whether or not it's scary or not -- they've just said they've enjoyed the game. So, maybe it's good but not as scary as previous entires in the series? I guess we'll find out soon enough, thankfully.

As for your buying Fatal Frame II: I'm jealous! I've had all three of the Fatal Frame PS2 games on my Amazon wish list for ages, but I have yet to bite the bullet and buy them. Hopefully this year.

Anyway, I look forward to hearing what you think of the second one. Have you played the first, BTW?

Devil Survivor Overclocked and all those Atlus, Aksys and XSeed games that never make it here are what are swaying me.

Ah, well, I'd say all of those are pretty good reasons, Retr0gamer! Now you just have to figure out what color you want :)

Yaaays. I love horror games. I am all like "Mwahahaha bring it on!" and my Player 2 friend is like "Seriously! My heart is going to explored from this horror game !" I love Fatal Frame. Especially Fatal Frame 3.

Hey there, anon :) Ah, a person after my own heart! I especially like watching horror games, by the way. Playing them is fun enough -- if stressful -- but watching someone else play them is even better :) Anyway, hope you and your Player 2 friend enjoy this one.
