Acquisition #129: Final Fantasy (PSP)

So, over the last month or two I've mentioned quite a few times--or at least I think I have--that I'm slowly but surely working on increasing the size of my (heretofore rather meager) PSP game collection.

This portable remake--the 20th, I think--of the first Final Fantasy is one of said acquisitions.

There are three major reasons I finally decided, after much hemming and hawing, to hand over my hard-earned cash for this Tose-developed rehash of Square Enix's classic RPG:

1. I really like its cover art (see image to the right),

2. I kind of like what I've seen of this version's higher-resolution graphics (despite the fact that I'm a huge fan of the chunky sprites found in the NES original), and

3. It was an absolute steal, setting me back less than $10 (including shipping).

I'm sure some of you are wondering, How many times can you play through the same, old game? I'm not sure how to answer that question, to tell you the truth, as I've played through the original Final Fantasy many, many times over the years and I'm still not sick of it.

That said, it'll be interesting to see if I make it to the end this time around or if I stop somewhere short of the credits. Regardless, I'll get as far as I can and then work up a review of it that lets you know if I consider it to be a worthy remake or a waste of your time and money.

I adore the original Final Fantasy. It does so many interesting things and isn't really as grind intensive as most would have you believe.

The PSP remake is actually quite pretty looking, even if it comes off sometimes as one of those cheap South Korean online MMOs.

Keep us posted. I still have an original NES copy of this game in great shape. I've never finished it, but I played it for several hours...enough to know it's solid.

Alois: Ah, I adore the original FF, too! I'm sure some of that adoration is due to nostalgia, but I also think it's just an overall great game.

As for the graphics looking a bit "cheap South Korean MMO": I agree there, too. Still, the game's hardly ugly, so I won't complain too much :)

Wait, Justin... You have a copy of the NEX version but you've only played it a few hours? I know I'm one to talk (I own a number of games I've never played, or barely played), but what's up with that? You really should give it a better chance sometime when you have time, as it really is a great game (although obviously a bit archaic compared to today's RPGs).

I'm on the look out for FF2 on the PSP since I hear it's the only one that's actually playable. Can't seem to find it. Great find, it might be a bit archaic but I really enjoy FF1 and have beaten it about 3 times in various iterations.

Ah, I'm on the fence about picking up the PSP remake of FF2 myself, Retr0gamer. I've never enjoyed any iteration I've played of the game, so I have a feeling I won't enjoy the PSP version either. Should you ever find it, I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it :)

To be honest, I played it until after the first major boss fight, and then I got stuck, so I quit. Someday I'm sure I'll go back and give it some more time. But yeah...no box, but the game is in good shape.

Ah, I definitely can see getting a bit stuck in the NES version of the original game. Anyway, yes, give it a try again in the future -- and this time use a guide (online or otherwise). It's great that you have the cart, though. Really wish my brother and I hadn't sold ours years ago so we could buy a SNES :(
