Let's Play: 'Which Box Art is Better?' (Mr. Driller edition)

So, I'm currently feeling a bit obsessed with the Mr. Driller series.

I'm not sure what brought about this obsession, to tell you the truth, although I think it may have branched off of my Wonderswan obsession (which I'm still in the throes of, by the way).

Regardless, this obsession recently prompted me to do a bit of research on this Namco-developed and -published series--which in turn prompted me to realize that some really adorable box art has been produced for the different versions of this pastel-filled title.

Here, for instance, is what I'm guessing is the most widely known piece of Mr. Driller cover art, which appeared on copies of the PlayStation version of the game when it was released in North America:

The following piece of box art, on the other hand, appeared on copies of the Japanese PlayStation version of Mr. Driller:

While this one appeared on copies of the European PlayStation version:

And then there are the Dreamcast ports of Mr. Driller. The Japanese release featured this rather precious illustration on its packaging:

European copies, on the other hand, featured this fabulous (you've just got to love that rainbow, don't you?) image on their covers:

I know I say this a lot, but I honestly like each and every one of them. If I were forced to choose my favorites, though, I'd probably put the Japanese Dreamcast cover in the pole position and give the runner-up trophy to that game's European counterpart.

What do all of you think? Do you like one or two of the box arts shown above more than the others?

The first of the PS1-versions face with the rainbow on the Dreamcast european one. That would make it perfect. But they are all cute as you say!

Love the "precious" Dreamcast port!

Euro Dreamcast

Linnea: Oh, so you want to mix and match, eh? I'm OK with that! Personally, though, I think the Euro DC port's cover is pretty perfect already :)

Justin: Yeah, I like that one a lot, too! Of course, I like all of them, so you may want to take that comment with a grain of salt.

Yay, Adam! Euro Dreamcast fans unite :)

Been some time so time to make up! I quite like the Japanese play station one just because of the full-body stitching.

Oh, yes, I like the "texture" in the Japanese PS cover, too, Motherplayer. Nice to see you around here again, BTW! :)

EU DC for me, although Mr Driller is so adorable I don't really mind any of them (apart from the one that's just got the blocks on it). ^^~

I'm with you, Kimimi -- they're all so cute that it's hard to dislike any of them. That said, I'm seriously in love with the EU DC one at the moment. Must. Resist. Urge. To. Buy!!!

Wow, you hit the nail on the head, Bryan! They're all super cute. But I have to admit, I don't really like the European PlayStation cover... It just looks rather dull by comparison. On the other hand, I think the European Dreamcast cover is the bomb! Mostly due to the fact that I've never seen Suzumu in that determined fist pose, and it's too cute for words.

But the pastel colors on the Japanese covers are really nice, too! And the US PS1 cover is just so iconic... Oh, what the heck, I'll take 'em all!

The PS1 version will always be close to my heart, but I think the Dreamcast cover wins.

Anne: I agree that the Euro PS cover is the worst of the bunch, but I personally don't think it's at all bad. I'd actually like it a whole lot more if the illustration of Susumu was a bit more obvious/bold. Also, I don't really like the Northern Lights-esque backdrop.

Other than that, I'm glad to hear so many other folks like the Euro DC cover, too. I guess it must be the perfect Mr. Driller box art :)

You're going to want to kill me for asking this, BRIK, but which DC cover are you talking about -- the Euro one or the Japan one? Regardless, I agree that they're both great :)

Mr Driller rules! :) I've only ever played the DC version but I really must get around to buying the GameCube release! As for the covers - it's a toughie as they're all great. The top one is the one my DC version had but I quite like that one at the bottom too - never seen it before...

Ah, another Mr. Driller fan! Also, I agree with you, Simon -- all of the options here are great, IMO. I guess you really can't go wrong with such a cute main character :)
