Oh, look, another reason to buy a Wii U

I don't know about you, but my "Reasons I Want a Wii U" list already is chock-full of "launch window" releases--like New Super Mario Bros. U, Pikmin 3 and Wii Fit U. (Yes, I actually want Wii Fit U.)

Well, another first-party, launch-window game was not only added to that list but placed atop it over the weekend after watching the following video of the Pikmin-meets-Viewtiful Joe Wii U title that's currently known as Project P-100.

Although I first learned about this Platinum Games-developed title shortly after Nintendo's E3 2012 press conference ended early last week, I only paid attention to screenshots of it at that time. Those screenshots were nice enough, of course, but I'd be hard pressed to say they did much to pique my interest in the game.

The video above, though, did that and then some--as did this video, which shows what happens when you take your hoard of heroes insides one of Project P-100's many buildings, and this one, which features Nintendo's Bill Trinen.

Anyway, as strange as it may sound, Project P-100, or whatever it ends up being called, is now at the top of my Wii U wish list. Here's hoping it's either released alongside Nintendo's next console or shortly afterwards, as I'm extremely eager to give it a go.

I saw a short video of this game, and I thought it looks SO AWESOME. It's about time someone else jumped on the Pikmin bandwagon...

Haha, looks pretty crazy! I haven't even got around to getting a Wii yet though so I doubt I'll be playing it anytime soon :P

Justin: Yes, AWESOME is the right word to describe this game, IMO. I wonder why NOA ignored it during their presentation? I have a feeling it's because in terms of gameplay it's a bit too similar to Pikmin (although not really, when you think about it). Anyway, for me, this will be one of the first games I pick up for the ol' Wii U this year, no question!

Well, Simon, you could always skip buying a Wii and just buy a Wii U, since the Wii U is backwards compatible with the original Wii. I kind of doubt you're going to go that route, though :)

I still want to know why Nintendo didn't show this at their press conference. It looks awesome.

Project P-100 is my favorite too. In fact I was gushing about to your buddies at the Gaymebar yesterday, so be sure to tune into the podcast this week.

Hey there, 2D2Will: I have a feeling it's because its gameplay *looks* a bit too similar to Pikmin 3. Another reason could be that at first it looks a bit simplistic graphically. Just look at how folks over at NeoGAF reacted to it at first (by saying it looked like a GC game, etc.). Anyway, here's hoping they promote it when it's released...

warp: Ah! Great minds really do think alike, eh? ;)

You're on the Gaymebar podcast this week? Why, I'll definitely check it out then. Was it some sort of E3 wrap-up or something?

Anyway, I can't wait to see more of and hear more about P-100. It really looks like something special thus far.

Yep, we did the annual, extra-long podcast for all the E3 excitement. It was my first time on there, and instead of having 20 guests phoning in during a party (like last year), they just had me & their friend Chad in the studio with them.

Apparently I was the only one paying attention to this game, cuz the other guys didn't even know what it was.

The WiiU....I can't say I'm hyped. Looks pretty lame.

Bryan Ochalla said...

warp: I keep forgetting you live in Atlanta. So, have you known the Gaymebar guys for a while, or did you only meet them recently?

Anyway, I can't believe you're the only one who even knew about P-100. Of course, I get the feeling that the GB guys aren't the hugest Wii/Wii U fans, so that may have a little something to do with it :)

Bryan Ochalla said...

Tom: Fair enough. Not every system is going to appeal to everyone, of course.

Question for you: Do you find both the Wii U system in general and this game in particular lame, or just the Wii U?

I ask because I have a feeling that if this game were announced for and released for, say, the PS3 and/or the 360, many, many gamers would be interested in it, esp. consider who is making it.

I've been bugging the Gaymebar guys for awhile on twitter, and I finally convinced them to meet up with me at a real bar on the previous weekend. Hopefully I will be seeing more of them in the future.

Chad & Jeremiah are Wii owners, and Xenoblade fans too. Toupsi claims he will be buying a ton of old Wii games along with the Wii-U at launch. They all love Pikmin, and I think the only reason they missed this was because Nintendo didn't mention it during their press conference.

Chalgyr said...

This game looks pretty cool I have to agree. Like Tom, the Wii U isn't a system I'm super excited about yet (though I wouldn't go so far as to call it lame).

I think my skepticism comes from the fact that while I have enjoyed some good games for the Wii since getting it, it still gets played less than my 360 or PS3

Bryan Ochalla said...

Oh, of course you're right about Jeremiah and Xenoblade. I completely forgot about that. I wasn't ripping on them, BTW, I've just gotten the sense from them that they're more interested in the PS3 and/or 360. Nothing wrong with that, even if it is the case. Anyway, I look forward to hearing you on the latest podcast!

Bryan Ochalla said...

Chalgyr: Understood. I'm not overly excited about the Wii U as a whole yet, but that's partially because Nintendo's still keeping things close to its chest. I am quite curious about the whole Miiverse aspect of the system, though, and whatever online functionality that brings to the system.

I, for one, could care less about the Wii U's power -- or the power of the PS3 or 360 successors. I was happy with the 8-bit and 16-bit machines, the Saturn/PS1/N64, the Dreamcast, the PS2, the GC, etc., so I'm sure I'll be happy with the Wii U and its competitors too.

I actually think it's interesting to hear which current systems people play the most and why. For instance, you say you've played your PS3 and 360 the most this gen. I, on the other hand, have played my Wii about 100 times more than my 360. That doesn't mean I don't like my 360, mind you, just that I've been more interested in the experiences the Wii has to offer at this point.

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see if that continues next gen, or if I turn my focus to another system, like the PS3 successor...

I'm super excited for the Wii U! It looks like it has an amazing launch line. Probably one of the best I've seen in a long while.

And where is the love for Nintendo Land? It honestly looks like the pinnacle of Nintendo's short, simple games that are immensely gratifying.

I'm excited about Wii U.
P-100 - I dunno. Doesn't grab me in any way.
I hope rumour of Eternal Darkness 2 being shutdown is not true :( (that was my big hope for Wii U hehe)

Also I noticed the E3 trailers are in the eShop :) (new mario bros, paper mario, luigi's mansion trailers)

Chalgyr said...

@Bryan: Agreed - there's definitely different reasons for why certain people prefer certain systems. I am sort of an interesting contrast/hypocrite because I absolutely do enjoy increased graphics power and hardware capability - but I am also perfectly happy playing an 8-bit NES title. :P Still, if all things are otherwise equal, I'll take the graphically superior instance.

The online is a big one for me too - actually, for my family. My wife uses the PS3 mostly for Netflix, which comes out at a higher res than the Wii I believe. My youngest for online titles like LittleBigPlanet, though she is probably our heaviest Wii user as well.

My son prefers online shooters like CoD and Battlefield, so for him the PS3 > 360 because he can play online for free (he only gets gold accounts when Microsoft has their $1/mo deals once in awhile), and because he says it's easier to find and play with friends on the PS3 vs the Wii.

Me, I play a bit of everything on all systems, but my favorites from this generation have GENERALLY been from the PS3. And while I don't go out of my way to collect tons of achievements and trophies, if all things are equal again? I prefer to have them than not.

Sorry bud... this comment got way longer than intended, lol :)

Alois: I'm curious about NintendoLand, but I have to see more of it/hear more about it to become truly excited about it. For instance: Will each mini-game have a solo-play option? What about an online component? Oh, and how much will it cost -- if it's not a pack-in? I agree that a number of the mini-games that have been shown off already look/sound nice, but I'm going to need to be a bit more impressed if I'm going to hand over my hard-earned cash for it, esp. since I'm already likely buying NSMBU, P-100, Pikmin 3 and Wii Fit U.

Igor: What is it about this game that doesn't grab you? The setting? The gameplay? The overly bright graphics?

I can't say I'd be sad about Eternal Darkness 2 being shut down, but that's because I never played the first. That said, I do hope it's made for folks like you who seemingly loved the GC original!

As for the E3 trailers: I think they've been there for a while. At the very least, I've had the ones you mentioned on my 3DS for a few days now. I really like the Paper Mario one!

Bryan Ochalla said...

Chalgyr: No reason to apologize! I certainly don't mind long comments :)

I hear where you're coming from, and all of your reasons for preferring the PS3 to the rest of what's out there sound good to me.

For me, I have a feeling the Wii U will be my "go to" system next gen, but you never know. It really depends on what Sony does with the next PS, really. If, for instance, the PS4 (or whatever they call it) is reasonably priced -- uh, nothing over $350, for sure -- and is backwards-compatible with the PS3, I'll give it serious consideration, especially since I've yet to jump on the PS3 bandwagon.

If the system is released with a price tag like the one the PS3 was launched with, and it doesn't play PS3 games, it's likely I'll wait until late in the gen to buy it, if I decide to buy it at all. In that case, I'll probably pick up a PS3 and a bunch of its games on the cheap instead.

I've already pretty much decided I won't pick up the 360's successor no matter what, though. I think the 360 is an OK machine, but I rarely play it and its catalog of games overall just doesn't appeal to me. As such, I'd rather spend my money on 3DS, PS3, Wii U and retro games.

P100 just grab me as a whole - cant really narrow it down to the why.
You should try get Eternal Darknes GC! If you can't you can be naughty and get the Dolphin emulator and try it out that way (even lazier way is to check out the walk thru vids on YouTube hehe)

I'm kinda with you in your last point on your comment about PS3 and Xbox. I got Xbox to play Lost Odyssey (which I still need to finish!!) and once I do it's getting sold/traded in to go towards Wii U as I've found none of the games really interest me on Xbox (and usually the ones that do come to PC anyways). Kinect doesn't interest (I'm not really into dancing games) and I felt slightly insulted that it took MS a year to put in voice control for Kinect in Australia due to our accent (so I've heard). For "PS4" it will need to have back compat before I even consider upgrading.

I am most looking forward to Wii U and can't wait to see how Miiverse turns out (especially on the 3ds!) will also be interesting to see how Nintendoland will end up being ad I hope it has local and online multiplayer (I think it needs to show how online can work on Wii U)

Hello again, Igor!

RE: P-100 -- OK, no worries. I was just curious as to why it didn't grab you.

I think I'll check out Eternal Darkness via YouTube. I know a lot of people love the game, but I've just never been all that curious about it for some reason.

I'm also curious about Miiverse, by the way. Also, I, too, hope NintendoLand ends up having online multi (along with local multi, of course). Its appeal will suffer greatly without it, IMO.
