So, what are the odds that we're all going to turn down the volume on our trusty 3DSes after playing New Super Mario Bros. 2 for a bit?

I ask because it just hit me that although I'm likely to have a blast collecting coin after coin after coin while playing New Super Mario Bros. 2, I'm also likely to go completely bonkers due to the constant "ching! ching! ching!" that will be coming out of my 3DS' speakers as I do it.

That said, I'm willing to risk my sanity in order to traipse (yes, traipse) through some of the levels revealed in the latest trailer for this cash-obsessed platformer.

My favorite moments in the trailer below (and here): That never-before-seen nighttime-ish stage shown at the 14-second mark, the rainbow-filled one that follows (at :22) and the rampaging Mega Mario that pops up at :40. Oh, and the golden Big Boo that's given the spotlight at :52.

All that said, I'm not as excited about New Super Mario Bros. 2 as I'd expect to be. Maybe that's because I'm days away from getting my hands on copies of Rhythm Thief & The Emperor's Treasure and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. Or maybe it's because I'm looking forward to getting my hands on Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Paper Mario: Sticker Star sometime later this year.

Another possibility: I'm just into the whole "collect a million coins" thing that seems to be this game's raison d'être.

Are any of you also feeling similarly ho-hum about New Super Mario Bros. 2? If so, are you planning to pick up a copy of it anyway or are you going to pass on it in favor of something else?

I'm excited for it, actually. I know some might have Mario burnout, but I'm always up for another romp through the Mushroom Kingdom.

That being said, I actually wondered to myself a few days ago about the coin noise. I was imagining being halfway through the game and not being able to bear another "pwing!"

Hey there, Justin! Weren't you kind of ho-hum about this one shortly after it was announced? I guess you've had a bit of an about-face, huh?

Anyway, I'm usually up for another romp through the Mushroom Kingdom, too -- especially when said romp looks as good and as fun as this one.

That said, I'm still worried about that coin noise...

Mario burnout? What is that? NEVER!!!

I never really thought about the coin noise, but now that I am thinking about it, I don't mind it. I actually look forward to it and all the nostalgia/good memories it brings.

They could do NSMB3 next year and I wouldn't be mad, I love these games. The only thing missing is a level editor.

Hey there, Daniel :)

I honestly don't know if I've ever experienced Mario burnout. Of course, until recently, Nintendo's never released enough Mario platformers (as opposed to spin-offs) within a short window of time for me to even consider it.

All I care about is that I really enjoyed NSMBWii. As such, I'm expecting to love both the 3DS and Wii U sequels, too.

That said, I would't mind if they changed up this series a bit. I'd like more new level types, for instance. And more new suits. Like, I want that chicken suit that was considered for NSMBWii!

I wonder if they'll ever include a level editor in one of these games? Would really make sense in New Super Mario Bros. U, don't you think? And then if they allowed you to share your creations? Ooooooooooooh!!!

BTW, here's a set of Japanese commercials for this game -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxMqv5ZGn2Y&feature=youtu.be

I especially love the first one. "Coin! Coin! Coin!" Ha ha :)

I don't think I'll mind the coin noise: I'm excited for the new levels in this game like the constantly-running night stage which will set it apart from the other games.

In terms of Mario burnout, I think it's impossible for me to get tired of it; however, my wallet might just cry after this year is over!

Hey there, javado! Welcome to this blog :)

Ah, someone else who likes the look of that night stage! What's up with that, by the way? I'm sure there's more to it than being a night stage, but I'm not sure what it is yet. Hmmm.

As for your wallet crying after this year: I hear that! Between all the 3DS games I want, the Wii U, and a bunch of retro systems that require support (Famicom, PC Engine and even PSone), I'm not sure how I'm going to do it. I'll do my best, though :P

Oh, no! I was never ho-hum about this! I said something about how I didn't understand how people could be AGAINST a new Mario game...I'm gung-ho!

Oh, maybe I'm thinking of someone else? I seriously thought you said you weren't interested in it after it was announced. My bad!

Are you looking forward to the Wii U one, too? THAT is the one I'm really looking forward to. That stage thats' set at night and sees Mario et al jumping from glowing star to glowing star? SWOON!

The coin noise didn't even cross my mind until now. Yeah, that could get pretty annoying over time. Perhaps there will be an option to turn off that sound affect. I doubt it though.

All that said, the game looks super fun! Do want!

Bryan Ochalla said...

Yeah, I also doubt you'll be able to turn off the sound. Hopefully it won't be as annoying as it seems it could be.

Anyway, like you, Reggie, I'm looking forward to this. Not sure I'll get it day one, though. You?

Maybe they put a slider in the options screen "Coin Noise Volume" :p
I dont think it's that much of an issue.
I think I'll be getting it (maybe) when I get the XL. But that's like a month and a half away....

Bryan Ochalla said...

Igor: I wasn't *completely* serious with this post. I mean, sure, the coin sound may wind up being a bit annoying, but I'm not too worried about it.

So, you're getting an XL, eh? Which color are you planning to buy?

I'm already sick of the "ching!" noise, Bryan ;) I don't really dig the style of the New Super Mario Bros. titles but if someone gave this to me I wouldn't say no, if you know what I mean. Ha ha.

Viewtiful_Justin said...

Definitely. I'm loving the trend that Donkey Kong Country Returns started of very atmospheric levels!

Bryan Ochalla said...

Ah, so I wasn't that far off base when I wrote this post's header! That's good to hear :)

BTW, Anne, I'm pretty much in the same boat as you -- as in, I'm not the biggest fan of the NSMB art style. I really wish the folks at Nintendo would change it up a bit for any future installments, as this style is just too boring/generic for me.

That said, I think the Wii version looked miles better than the DS one, and this 3DS sequel looks to be very similar to the Wii release, so at least there's that.

Bryan Ochalla said...

Justin: Agreed! I hope there are more such levels in the Wii U sequel especially :)
