Japanese 3DS owners get the best Swapnote stationary designs

I don't know about you, but I haven't opened up my 3DS' Swapnote app for some time now.

That's not a reflection on the quality of the product, mind you; rather it's a reflection on my inability to deal with the flood of a million (give or take a few thousand) Swapnotes that are sure to flood my in-box should I decide to check in on it.

I'm seriously considering testing my mettle, though, thanks to the following handful of stationary designs that have been sent to Japanese 3DS owners in recent weeks.

I'm pretty keen on the one above, which first appeared about a month ago in response to the continued success of Denpa Ningen no RPG 2 (aka The "Denpa" Men 2), because of its colorful, Katamari Damacy-esque vibe.

The rather classy one above, on the other hand, was released to celebrate the arrival of the new year.

In a cruel twist of fate, not only do Japanese 3DS owners get to play Tobidase Dōbutsu no Mori (aka Animal Crossing: New Leaf), but they also get to exchange adorable, Animal Crossing-themed notes and doodles thanks to the stationary design seen above (which was first delivered to unsuspecting gamers a week or so ago).

Two days ago, the folks at Nintendo starting sending out the precious piece of stationary that can be seen above, which once again includes characters from the popular eShop title, Denpa Ningen no RPG 2.

Will those of us who don't have Japanese 3DSes (or don't have friends who have Japanese 3DS3s) ever gain access to any of these Swapnote designs? I have my doubts, but I'm crossing my fingers and toes all the same.

If anybody can find them for you, it's probably Igor. He sends out a lot of stationary! I got the Animal Crossing one, and I'm pretty sure it came from him. Also a Pikmin design came out recently, which I have. Of course I can send those to you, if you want.

Thanks, Steve :) Let me think about it, OK? As much as I want these pieces of stationary, I really am scared to open the damn software! Sigh.

That's hilarious. I have tons of friends registered, but I do a good job keeping up with it, so I never even thought about it getting out of control. Are you worried it's going to crash your system or something? Or do you just feel guilty about not reading and responding to everybody's messages?

You should open your Swapnote! I think Igor has already sent you MOST of these. I've gotten them from him, and you're usually listed as another recipient as well. DO IT! :-P

i have all but the last one- (I'm currently also on the hunt for the kirby stationary) I never heard from you when I had you on my swapnote so I took you off because I didn't want to be a bother, I send so many swapnotes sometimes, I know it clogs up for people who don't check regularly...

I think now I can't live without the Animal Crossing stationery... oh and there's a Pikmin one too? Forget the AC one, I'll try to befriend a Japanese 3DS to obtain it...

I just can't deal with opening up the app and having to wait while a million Swapnotes download onto my system. Also, how am I ever supposed to read or delete all of them. Ahhhhh!

thegaygamer.com said...

Maybe I'll do it just so I can experience the horror of seeing all of those messages pour into my in-box :)

thegaygamer.com said...

Oh, I'm sorry, Kelly! I certainly didn't mean to ignore you. The fact is, I stopped checking Swapnote a few months after I got my 3DS, which was a LOOOOOOOOONG time ago :|

There's a Pikmin one, too? Hmmmm, haven't seen that ...

I kinda felt bad for sending out so many notes- but at the same time I wanted people have feel that had a reason to use the service, so I sent out so many posts... I know it's rough on people who don't check often, don't feel bad.

Awww those are so super cute.
I get the most cute stationaries because diaglyph sends them to me as nintendo message.

Oh, I don't think you should feel bad. People can either choose to read your posts or not, right? No biggie. I think I may open up the app again this weekend. Wish me luck!

Ha ha! I wasn't aware diaglyph/Igor was such a Swapnote junkie. Thanks for letting me know :)

Ooh, I want these! I use swapnote from tine to time, but I only have one friend :/

Jump into Swapnote/Letter Box, its fun :)
Did you get the one from that bizarre Japanese game? I forget the name, but it just has silhouettes of the "creatures" from the game.

Oh, I've been in it before, Igor, but after about a month I stopped for whatever reason. So, messages have been building up ever since :|

I may just delete the app completely and start over again--and ask you/others to resend the most interesting stationary designs :)

thegaygamer.com said...

Ha! I guess you are :)

diaglyph said...

Thats probably easiest way. You'll have to go thru the Nikki messages and after a while you'll be able to receive stationery etc
Let me know when you're ready for that :)

Okie dokie.

diaglyph said...

you can spam me with notes too (to unlock the features etc and to stop nikki nagging u haha)

OK, will do!

Bryan, I'm LTTP as I often only read your blog on weekends, but I had to make this case for Swapnote. If you can get back into it, you seem like the type of obsessive gamer who (like me) would be pathetically proud to have collected every single stationery. I mean, 4 out of the almost 90-available stationeries are Denpa Men - that's pretty weird and cool.

Because I like strange, archaic, and broken technologies, I do enjoy the creaky aspects of Swapnote. It's kind of like Twitter with tin cans and string, very slow and inefficient; but it's idiosyncratic and neat to see an individual's cursive style or illegible printing. If only there was a way to delete all the notes from a single person, or all the notes period. But no, you have to go through each one and delete them one at a time. If you do, it'll take a few hours, no question. You'll have no more than 3000 total, and when you download further, it'll apparently just automatically delete the oldest notes (that haven't been favorited).

The worst part is only 20 notes at a time are downloaded, so you have to wait a minute for that to happen, then let the download start again, sometimes by attempting to leave via the Home button, triggering the lil' blue light on the icon and going back in. Having to do this 150 times is a daunting thought. You're best off doing it while watching TV.

But if you at least get started on it, you probably have a high quality Friend List (not largely populated with 13 year-olds like mine unfortunately - and accidentally - is) so you'll be largely charmed by photos of Igor's cats and of my 3 year old daughter, and by good-natured comments on videogames and pop culture.

Hey, Swapnote was how I learned Whitney Houston died! (thanks to Igor for that too!)

Oh, boy, David, there's no way in hell I'm going to take a few hours to check and delete all of those old Swapnotes. If anything, I'll do as Igor suggested and delete the app, redownload it and then ask people for the stationary designs I want.

I do really like the app, by the way, I like it for many of the same reasons as you, but I had a hard time keeping up with it the first time around. Not sure I'll be any more able to keep up with it this time, but I'll try my best :)

DavidR said...

Fair enough! If I had FE:A waiting for me, I'd make it a priority over deleting old Swapnotes! When/If you get around to it, you may be able to just delete the Save File and not have to reinstall the whole app. I've not done it, but I've heard it can be done. Enjoy your gaming this weekend!
