A few thoughts on a handful of recently released Japanese box arts

What do you write about when you're hopped up on cold meds and, as such, can't think straight? (As if I was ever able to do that anyway.) If you're me, you write about something tried and true--you know, like Japanese box art.

Thankfully, there are quite a few stellar--or at least interesting--pieces of Japanese cover art to chat about at the moment. For example:

The art above will grace the packaging of Daigasso! Band Brothers P when it releases on Nov. 14. (I'm planning to pick up a copy of this game myself, by the way, although possibly not until after the holidays.)

The box art produced for the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster TWIN PACK (boy, is that a mouthful) is pretty snazzy, too, don't you think? Would you believe it if I told you I've never played either of the games included in this collection? Well, it's true. I've always wanted to give X-2, especially, a go, though. Maybe I'll buy the localized version of this release at some point after I acquire a Vita (or a Vita TV)?

Full disclosure: I know next to nothing about Liberation Maiden SIN. I mean, other than the fact that it's being released for the PS3, and that it likely has something to do with the similarly titled game that originally was included in Level-5's Guild01 for 3DS. Regardless, I quite like the looks of its box art.

The cover art above was produced for another game I know little about--that being Steins;Gate: Senkei Kousoku no Phenogram. I do know it's going to be released on Nov. 28, though, so hopefully I'll learn more about it between now and then. (At least enough for me to come to a conclusion as to whether or not I should long for its localization.)

Finally, there's Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai 2's plucky, pastel-infused box art, above. I had this game pre-ordered via amiami.com for a hot second, by the way, but decided to cancel it after I pre-ordered the gold Pokémon Center 3DS LL that should arrive on my doorstep ... sometime between now and the end of the year. (I'm kidding, kind of.)

That's not to say I've given up on owning a copy of this adorable looking rhythm title; on the contrary, I'm still hoping to add it to my collection, although that may not happen for a few months now.

Anyway, with all that out of the way, what do you lads and lasses think of the above examples of Japanese box art? Do you love some of them? Hate some of them? Feel absolutely nothing about any of them? Let me know in the comments section below.

I've always thought the Band Brothers games had a pretty cool set of covers. They localize well too, for the one time that happened (not for the US, though), which I only mention 'cuz I keep talking about logos. I think this red one is the coolest yet!

I'm not too drawn in by the others--I'm not really into any of these games, tbh! Liberation Maiden is one I've been kind of interested in (from its eShop release) but I can't shake this feeling that I won't like it much.

I never hear of Liberation Maiden SIN before, so went and looked it up on http://suda51.wikia.com: "Liberation Maiden SIN is an upcoming game currently in development by Goichi Suda and Japanese games studio 5pb. It is a sequel to Liberation Maiden, although it will not feature the 3D shooter gameplay of its predecessor, instead going for a 'Visual Novel' approach. The game will be developed by Steins;Gate creator 5pb instead of Grasshopper Manufacture, although Suda has confirmed that he will be writing several of the game's scenarios[1]. As with Liberation Maiden, Yusuke Kozaki will be handling character design and illustrations." So that pretty much explains why nobody's talking about it.

Oh, yeah, you're definitely right in saying the Band Bros. games have had nice box art, Michael--even the Euro release of the second game.

It really is too bad (IMO, of course) that Nintendo hasn't been able to make this series work outside of Japan. Not that they've tried all that hard--they pretty much sent the localized version of DX to die in Euroland and never even tried in NA.

As such, I can't imagine they'll bother with this one either--which is too bad, as it looks to have more modes than previous ones (so playing it in Japanese may not be so fun for me).

As for not being all that into the other options shared in this post: that's OK! That's how it goes, right?

Actually, I'm only interested in a few of the actual games myself. Mostly I was just interested in their box arts :)

Ah, you know what, Steve? Now I remember that I *did* read this description of the game at some point in the past. Also, like you said, I now can see why I forgot about it. I'm sure it'll appeal to some folks, especially a certain breed of Japanese gamer, but I doubt it'll appeal to many others.

Oh, dang. So this isn't even the same one that I thought I was talking about being hesitant about (the 3DS one). Pretty much for sure this is not something I'm interested in. :/

I guess not! Sounds like it's a VN spin-off, which is curious to say the least.

I do hope we can get Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD remake with this box art.. It is too beautiful not to come here as well..And I hope someone can localize Steins gate games though..

Hello again! Has the North American box art for these releases not been revealed yet, enorka? I honestly don't know. Anyway, yes, it would be nice if they featured this art, wouldn't it?

As for Steins;Gate: normally I'd say the chances of a game like this getting a localization would be slim, but since we're getting at least the first Dangan Ronpa Vita release, who knows?

I like the FFX box and wouldn't mind seeing it over here. I bought the Vita when they were first announced because they likely mean a portable version of FFXII.

I haven't beaten X-2 yet, either. I still have my PS2 copy, but the more mission-based structure seems ideal for a handheld game.

Steins;Gate is an especially interesting Visual Novel, but I haven't checked out this sequel yet (PS3 rev was released earlier in the year). The art is striking -- the whole game is done in the same style as that cover.
