Yep, another art post: 'Bombs Away,' 'Hyrule Intentions' and 'Tale of Two Brothers'

Like any respectable gay gamer, I've long had a soft spot for female protagonists. In particular, I've had a soft spot for Nintendo's leading ladies--Peach, Samus and Zelda, especially.

All of which should help explain why I went a big gaga after I came across artist Kasey Tararuj's uniquely styled portraits (above and below) of the above-mentioned women this past weekend.

Each piece was produced for the 3NES Show ("a tribute to three of Nintendo's most popular games") held at the Bottleneck Gallery in Brooklyn, New York, a few weeks ago.

If you like any or all of them as much as I do, I'd highly recommend checking out Tararuj's blog, One-Eyed Girl, for closer looks at them.

Specifically, additional shots of her take on Peach (titled "Tale of Two Brothers") can be seen here, while more shots of her Samus and Zelda portraits ("Bombs Away" and "Hyrule Intentions") can be seen here and here, respectively.

And if you're really interested in them? Head on over to the Bottleneck Gallery's online shop and buy one or more of them. ("Bombs Away" can be purchased here, "Hyrule Intentions" here and "Tale of Two Brothers" here.)

Ooh. I'm not sure I'm on board with this. They're sort of oversexualized and grotesque.

I knew that might be the case--that not everyone would be on board with the art style. Personally, though, I really like it. It's out there and even kind of Beetlejuice-esque. (BTW, I'm not sure I agree that they're over-sexualized. Are you saying that because of their breasts?)

They could of look like mummy snakes. A rather fitting post for October.

Also I want a Zelda spin off game. I mean Tingle has two and Zelda doesn't have one even though the series is named after her. The CDI games don't count since Nintendo had little more to do with them beyond licensing.

Cartoony mummy snakes, eh? Well, that's certainly a creative way of describing them, Sam :)

Also, I didn't even think of this post being appropriate for October until you pointed it out. Awesome!

Oh, and I agree that we need a Zelda spin-off game. Hell, even Peach has been given a spin-off! Come on, Nintendo, you know we want it!

No. It's the giant hips and helpless eyes...and something about just the way they're represented...I dunno...

I do appreciate how gorgeous the backgrounds are. They're spot-on.

Huh. I guess I can see where you're coming from, although I still like these pieces. Anyway, I'm just glad I could make people aware of them and start a conversation :)
