I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm really digging the crazy-ass box art created for the 3DS remake of Dragon Quest Monsters 2

Some of you will think I've lost my marbles after actually taking a gander at the box art in question, I'm sure, but I'll stand by my assertion in the header until the bitter end. I think.

I mean, you can't deny that the cover art below--created for the Japanese 3DS remake of Dragon Quest Monsters 2, which hits Japanese store shelves alongside an awesome 3DS LL on Feb. 6--is fabulously colorful. Nor can you deny that the character illustrations featured on said cover art are anything less than adorably compelling.

If you were to tell me you thought the game's logo sucked or was a bit too wordy, though, I'd totally agree with you. Also, it blends in a bit too much with the art behind it, if you ask me. Still, I like it, and I hope it eventually finds its way across the pond to our shores--although we all know that's about as likely as Slime MoriMori Dragon Quest 3: Taikaizoku to Shippo Dan making it over here.

Speaking of which, the Japanese 3DS tumblog recently published a post that showcases the cox art created for all of the Dragon Quest games that have been released for the Japanese 3DS so far. Check it out here.

It's OK, Eduardo, I wouldn't have minded if you thought I was older :)

I agree with you about the logo being to wordy. Though I do like the fact they made the logo purple and green to match how a most of the monsters involve those colors in some way.

This post makes me sad because the last few DQ games don't seem to be getting releases outside of Japan. Hopefully Nintendo will strike up a deal with Square-Enix like how they did with Bravely Default, Fortune Street, and Dragon Quest IX/VI remake/ Monsters Joker 2.

Yes, Sam, the logo's colors are a nice touch, I think. And, really, there's really little they could've done about the name/title, so I probably shouldn't have singled it out.

As for feeling sad that those of us outside of Japan likely will never experience any of these 3DS DQ games: I'm with you 100 percent. I think we may get DQ7 sometime in 2014, but I don't think we'll get any of the others, sadly.

This is an interesting one! At a glance it's kind of jarring but if you actually focus in on any of the details it's hard not to like it. Even the logo is jam-packed but once I get in there and focus on an element it's kind of fun to let the eye wander around in there.

I like the way you put this, Michael, and I agree completely!

I'm biasd but I went with P3P sine I played all Persona's on PSP until P4G on Vita

I bought the PSP version, but the streamlined menu interface threw me off. It was my first Persona game, and I felt like something was missing. Now that I've played a decent chunk of Persona 4 Golden, I think I could go back to P3 and understand what I'm doing.

Either way, I don't think you can go wrong with a portable RPG.

And I'm guessing you liked it well enough despite the altered/simplified overworld, Chief?

Regardless, thanks for chiming in!

Hmmmm, so did the interface throw you off enough that you gave up on the game, Terry, or did it just kind of irk you for a bit?

Also, P4G's interface is more traditional, right--where you're actually walking around and interacting with NPCs, etc?

It didn't bother me at all. I'm used to it after playing quite a few SMT games that have simple overworlds. It would be nice to have a proper overworld but I didn't miss it.

Wow! I gotta watch my typos :-[

Thanks, Chief! And no worries about the typos :)

It was more irksome than anything else, since I'm so used to walking around in RPGs. I keep it on the Vita so I can go back to it now that I have a better feel for the series.

That's good to know. Still not sure which version I'll go with, of course, but I'm thankful for the input all the same :)

My preference is for Portable. The simple visual novel interface kept me from wasting my time on unessential activities. I'm also a big fan of the option that puts icons over interactive points, as without them, I would forget to save for in-game weeks at a time and then it was one stupid Mudo and Game Over.

I'd say you can definitely skip the original PS2 version. (Don't fall into the same trap I did! lol) I'd ask you which way would you prefer to play a long RPG dungeon crawler? With a controller on a big TV screen or wherever your PSP? I personally like it on the big screen and with a controller so I'm playing it that way with FES. This is one of the games that has the honor of being bought by me 3+ times. lol

Well, I'm here to tell you that right from the get-go I loved this box art! It's a bit nuts, but I still like it. I'm really digging the way they've split the top and bottom and unified the monsters through the use of color. Also, we need to see purple and green used together more! But yeah, the logo itself is a bit too jumbled...

thegaygamer.com said...

Ah, another supporter emerges! And it sounds like you liked it even before I did, Anne. Yay!

BTW, YES, the way the designers of this art unified the monsters through color is great, isn't it? Best thing about the cover, IMO.

Oh, I didn't mean to make it sound like I'd been "in the know" about this box before you, Bryan! I just meant the minute I saw it in this post I liked it ;) I'd be lying if I said it didn't make me want the game just a little

thegaygamer.com said...

I wasn't being snarky, Anne! I really thought you meant that you'd liked it since it was first revealed. Anyway, all the really matters is that we both like it :) Sadly, it doesn't really increase my interest in the game itself. Don't get me wrong--I want it to be released outside of Japan, but I don't much like it's art style. I much prefer the style used in the Dragon Quest 7 remake. Oh, well!
