I think we may be looking at another 'Link Between Worlds situation' RE: Yoshi's New Island

And by that I mean that although I think Yoshi's New Island always has looked a bit rough in screenshots (and even in early video footage), I have a feeling it's going to look pretty darn nice once it's chugging along on my 3DS XL's upper screen.

Which is pretty much the same situation The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds was in before it was released late last year. Most folks declared it uglier than sin in the lead-up to its release, but once they saw it in motion on actual 3DS hardware many of them--including yours truly--changed their tune.

Anyway, it doesn't much matter to me at this point if Yoshi's New Island ends up being more impressive--in terms of its looks as well as its music and gameplay--than it currently appears to be, as I pre-ordered a copy of it long ago and nothing's going to prompt me to cancel it.

All that said, why do all of you think of the game's latest trailer, above? Does it look appealing enough that you're going to give it a chance, or are you planning to give it a pass?

Hmm, this trailer is giving me much more of a Yoshi's Story vibe than an Island vibe. None of these trailers are helping me at all. Its going to need some good reviews from the right people or a demo to convince me to pay for it new / full price.

This trailer looks fun. That sounds terribly simplistic, but trailers don't always articulate that emotion clearly and allowing longer clips gave me a better sense of the flow of actions. Hmmm, yes, this just went from 'not interested' into the maybe pile.

Hmmm, I personally think it looks more Yoshi's Island than Yoshi's Story, Jeff, but I can't fault you for feeling the opposite! I also can't fault you for not wanting to pay full price for a game you're more than a bit skeptical about. Sadly, I doubt Nintendo will released a demo of this one, so you'll probably have to keep an eye on reviews. I'll share my impressions of it as soon as I'm able, of course, but a) I'm not sure you care about my opinion of the game (which is OK!) and b) I probably won't be as timely with my impressions as others are, as I have to wait for Amazon to deliver it, etc.

Oh, that's great! So many people have been ragging on this game as of late that it's nice to hear some positivity in regard to it. Anyway, here's hoping it actually lives up to our positivity!

I'll buy it, but not right away. It's too close on the heels of Final Fantasy X/X-2, which I'm eager to start playing. I can save it for a platforming drought after I finish Donkey Kong Country Returns, which is my current 3DS obsession.

I really can't wait for this game. Of all Nintendo's characters Yoshi is the one I love without reservation and will buy a game simply because he's on the cover.

The 3DS' steam is just not letting up. I can't stop playing the console.

The Yoshi Story vibe I am getting comes from the slow speed on display here (from all characters & enemies) plus how large and soft everything looks. There quick and dynamic mechanics of the original Yoshi's Island look lost in this video. But I eagerly await your review!

Ah, that actually makes quite a bit of sense, Jeff! In a way, it kind of seems to be a bit of both games--the basic gameplay of Yoshi's Island and the speed of Yoshi's Story, plus an art style that takes cues of both.

I'm with you 100 percent RE: the 3DS, Matt. Such an amazing system and library of games, IMO. Hard to believe Nintendo could knock it out of the park in such an amazing way with two successive handhelds!

Ah, yes, FFX and FFX-2! You've been looking forward to them for a while, haven't you? As for DKCR: I played and rather enjoyed the Wii version, but I didn't enjoy it enough to buy the 3DS version. Glad to hear you're getting a kick out of it, though!

I've ever really liked Yoshi (is that bad?), or Mario games in general. So I haven't really felt much interest in this game. But I also wasn't really interested in the new Zelda game, and I tried it anyway and it became one of my favorite games of 2013! So I feel like I need to give this a try too, haha. Maybe I'll wait for you to try it and tell us what your opinion is before I go out to get it.. :)

Hey there, GG! *Love* the new pic, by the way :) Anyway, you've never liked Yoshi? How's that possible?!? Actually, I can understand. I'm hardly a *fan* of the character myself. Oh, I think he's OK, but nothing amazing. My main interest in this game and any other Yoshi-focused platformer that's released is that I absolutely adore the original Yoshi's Island game. I have a hard time imaging this game comparing favorably to the original, but who knows? I also thought A Link Between Worlds would be an offensive dud compared to A Link to the Past, and look how wrong I was there! BTW, if you've never played Yoshi's Island -- go get a copy of it and play it NOW.

I'm so conflicted about this now. I was a flat out "no" on this, but then I saw that piranha plant, and it was gorgeous. And...I dunno. The thought of hunting for red coins makes my skin crawl...but I played probably a hundred hours of the first one...so...I don't know.

I hear ya, Justin. I've waffled on it, too. In the end, I decided I'd pre-order it anyway. I have to at least give it a chance, right? Especially considering how much I loved the first YI game (and even Yoshi's Story). Here's hoping the devs behind this one don't let me/us down...
