$3,600 for a sealed copy of Panic Restaurant?

I've played a lot of games the last few days. Among them: Taito's Panic Restaurant (aka Wanpaku Kokkun no Gourmet World in Japan), released for the NES in late 1992.

For those of you who have never heard of Panic Restaurant: It's a cute platformer which puts players in control of a chef named Cookie ("Naughty Kokkun" in the Japanese version) who has to make his way through a cursed restaurant. (See part of it in action here.)

Anyway, I've been playing the game using an emulator because, well, it's pretty darn expensive. Case in point: One eBay auctioneer is trying to sell a sealed copy of it for $3,599.99. (Another is selling a similarly pristine copy of the game for just $1,799.99.)

Opened copies of the game are cheaper, of course, although I'd hardly call them cheap. Loose copies, for instance, commonly command prices above $100.

Holy crap! I remember wanting this game when it was released, but I never ended up getting it. I wonder why it's so expensive? Rare? hey should release it on the Virtual Console...thin out the demand a little.

I'm pretty sure it's rare, Justin. It came out in 1992, after the SNES was released, so it probably didn't receive a very substantial release.

I'd LOVE it if it appeared on VC! In the meantime, I may buy the Japanese version, as it seems to be quite a bit cheaper.

Unfortunately, I prefer the design of the protagonist in the US version of the game -- which means I'll likely play that version via emulator even if that happens.

Hm. I may have to dredge up an emulator and this game...

Yes, I think you should do that. It's a pretty fun game -- though I should warn you that it's not a breeze, despite its cute appearance.

Amen to that. The game kicked my ass last night. Repeatedly! Two hits? Yikes...

Eventually you'll get four hearts, Justin, which makes things a bit better. Still, it is a tough game. I can get to the third stage pretty easily now, but there's a part there that completely kicks my ass...

I have that loose for the Famicom. Its harder-to-find than most, but I was lucky to get one in a lot that I bought. The NES version must be harder to find if it costs that much. Good game though.

That price really is crazy. I do not understand the attraction to sealed games at all. Boxed games I understand - the box and manual of some games are definitely worth paying more for. They are pretty.

But sealed stuff? Is a bit of plastic wrap that originally cost 0.001 cents really worth paying hundreds of dollars more for? And you can't even open the bloody things without ruining the value.

Anyway, end of rant. I could never get very far in that game. I haven't played it in a few months but I recall the flying pizzas giving me trouble.

Yeah, the price is *completely* crazy, Sean. Also, I'm 100% with you on sealed games -- esp. at that price. I can't imagine paying $3,600 for something like that and then just having it sit around. Like you, I can see the value in buying boxed games now and then (if that's your thing -- and it's certainly mine) if you like the box, etc.

As for you comments on the game -- yeah, those flying pizzas are annoying! The game definitely can be a bit cheap. Still, I really like the graphics -- and the fact that the game's theme is a bit different from the norm.
