Well, I guess I know what I'll be playing this weekend (and probably next) ...

There are two reasons I've been wanting to play the import-only-until-now GameBoy title, Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru (aka For the Frog the Bell Tolls), for some time: 1) Its protagonist, the Prince of Sable, is tasked with rescuing someone named Princess Tiramisu (she lives in Mille-Feuille Kingdom, by the way) and 2) Its engine was later used to make The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.

Well, it seems I can stop wanting and start playing, as someone calling himself RyanBGSTL (catchy name, I know) has just completed an English translation of this Intelligent Systems-developed title. (Download RyanBGSTL's patch at romhacking.net.)

In case you'd like to know a little more about the game before giving it a go, here's a video of its first nine minutes:

So how is it? Abd when can I start being angry that this title wasn't adequately represented in Smash Bros.?

Also, please do keep and then post a list of ridiculous people and place names.

Hey there, Drew! Well, I just started playing it last night and I'm not very far yet, so I can't give much feedback yet. What I can say is that I love its art style and music so far. Also, the story is quite innocent and cute, which I like.

As for your suggestion: I'm one step ahead of you, buddy! I've already started a post that will address the ridiculous (and kind of yummy) names and places that appear in this game. I'll post it as soon as I'm sure I've encountered all the game has to offer :)

Oh, and it's never too late to express your anger that some random, niche Nintendo game wasn't adequately (or otherwise) represented in Smash Bros. Duh!!

It looks awesome! I wish I had enough time for all the great RPG's. I know I'll never play half of them :(

p.s. the site for the rom patch doesn't work for me :(

Hey there, Simon! Hmmm, the entire romhacking site seems to be down at the moment. Maybe this post sent so many folks to the site that it was overwhelmed? Ha ha! Yeah, right. Anyway, I'd check back in a bit -- or even tomorrow. If it's not up by then, let me know and I can just send the patch to you via e-mail or something.

Or I can do that now, if you want. Just let me know!

This looks like it's right up my alley in so many ways... but the adorable cover art sealed the deal! I'll definitely be giving this a shot soon. I absolutely love well-made Gameboy games, especially cute ones.

Great! I can't wait to hear what you think about it. I'll share my thoughts on it, too.

BTW, thanks for mentioning the cover art -- I hadn't even thought of checking it out before now. It *is* cute. Man, I really have to get an original GB and some of these games sometime soon...

Oh, I heard about this translation the other day! It looks like a super-cute game, I think I'll definitely be checking it out once I get some of the stuff I'm currently playing out of the way.

What are you currently playing, Anne -- if you don't mind me asking?

As for this game -- yes, check it out! I've played it a bit already, and it's definitely cute :)

Well, I'm still working on Atelier Rorona, which I enjoy but am slowing getting tired of (lots of resetting to make sure I complete things timely before the deadlines is starting to feel too much like work). I also have a review copy of a game called X-Note which I wrote a small blurb about in my "Otome Game Primer" post, and I'd like to finish that soon so I can get my review up early next week.

Also, you won't believe this, but my mom sent me a package with FFT: War of the Lions and Patapon in it that I just got yesterday! So I really want to play those, haha. I'll probably start in on For the Frog the Bell Tolls after I finish X-Note, seeing as I need a break from Rorona ;) I was going to review an iOS game for VGW but looks like my iPhone might be too old to run it... We'll see...

Oh, that's too bad that you're tiring of Rorona. Would you still recommend it, or is it a pass overall?

That's great that your mom sent you some new PSP games! I esp. look forward to reading your thoughts on Patapon. I played the demo that's on PSN and really enjoyed it, but have yet to play the full game.

I also look forward to reading your thoughts on For the Frog, of course. It's so cool that games like this are finally getting a chance to shine in the English-speaking world -- many, many years after they were released in Japan :)

Before I even read this post, I thought to myself, "That looks like a Link's Awakening hack."

Bryan Ochalla said...

Ha! In reality, Link's Awakening is a hack of this game -- kind of. I played some more of it last night, by the way. I really like it, although the "combat" is odd and won't be everyone's cup of tea, I'm sure.
