Acquisition #143: Magical Puzzle Popils (Game Gear)

If you visit this blog with any regularity, you've likely seen a mention or two (or five) of the Tengen-published puzzler known as Magical Puzzle Popils in Japan and Popils: The Blockbusting Challenge in Europe.

As I'm sure you can guess from the frequency of those mentions, I'm a pretty big fan of this Game Gear title, which was designed by the man responsible for both Bubble Bobble and Rainbow IslandsFukio Mitsuji.

In fact, I'm such a big fan of this game that earlier this year I bought a loose copy of it via eBay. (You can see a photo of that acquisition and read more about it in this post.)

Given that, some of you are likely to be a bit surprised to hear that I recently picked up a complete-in-box copy of the very same game. Why did I do that, you ask? I think the cover art shown in the following photos is all the response I need to share.

In addition, I've also long wanted to own (and mindlessly flip through on a regular basis) Magical Puzzle Popils' manual. So, in a way, you could say this particular acquisition was kind of a two-for-one deal for me.

Expect to see scans of said manual in an upcoming "Manual Stimulation" post, by the way. Also, a few additional photos of both the front and back sides of this game's box will be uploaded to my Flickr photostream shortly, so keep an eye out for them, too, if you're so inclined.

Sweeet! I love the teeny little Japanese GG boxes. Great game too :)

I'm not surprised. :-P Looks like money well spent to me, though!

YES, Simon -- the teeny little GG boxes are adorable, aren't they? Really, how could I resist such things? It kills me that the GG version of Bubble Bobble wasn't released in Japan :(

Ha ha! I'll bet you weren't surprised, Justin :) I'm really on a roll lately, by the way. Someone keep me from accessing eBay! :P

That box art is too friggin cute. Also, I never thought to look up the individual people responsible for games I like, that'll be a lot more accurate than saying "well it's a Konami game so..." Thanks for the name!

Hello again, Bruce! Yeah, this game's box art is almost criminally adorable -- which, of course, is a good part of the reason I bought. (The other is that it's an awesome game, of course. And I'm currently in a "Game Gear kind of mood," for some weird reason.)

I don't always look up the people responsible for the games I like, Bruce, but this game has always been mentioned (to me, at least) as being made by the same guy who made Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands, so of course I always feel the need to mention that to other people :)

Keep up the great work on your blog/site, by the way! Sorry I haven't commented yet -- I promise to do so shortly. And of course I'm going to mention one of your latest creations (maybe the Master System version of Nights?) in an upcoming post!

Gorgeous! Thank you for sharing! :D

Looking forward to more on this one ^^~

You're welcome, Kimimi! BTW, are you looking forward to more info, more photos of the packaging or the promised scans of the manual? Or maybe all of the above?

Kimimi said...

All of the above of course! This looks like a lovely game and I want to hear all about it :D

Alrighty then, Kimimi! More photos will be up later today/tonight (on Flickr) while the 'Manual Stimulation' should appear next week or the week after. Not sure when I'll finally review the game, though -- maybe a week or so after that?

Thanks a ton! I'd really appreciate the feature haha, I'm going to do one more of them very soon. Thanks for the comments too...I replied to them, but I'm an idiot about Blogger still and accidentally deleted all my comments when I thought I was just deleting the notifications :^/

You're welcome, Bruce! BTW, I just noticed that the Tiny Cartridge guys did a post about your Adventure Time Famicom labels. Awesome!

Sorry to hear about your Blogger mistake, though :(

Ribbon Black said...

So THAT'S why my pageviews doubled today, I haven't checked TinyCartridge in a few days. That is AWESOME

Haha yeah, I'm gonna just stop pushing buttons on Blogger and let it do it's own thing.

Yep! I think they published it a few hours ago. Anyway, you'll definitely see a nice boost from that, I'm sure :)

The boxart reminds me so much of 80's anime

You mean that in a good way, right? Regardless, I can see it, too :)
