Puppeteer may make me reconsider my recent decision to pass on the PS3

I know Puppeteer, a Dynamite Headdy-esque PS3 platformer being made by the folks at Sony's Worldwide Studios, was unveiled about a month ago (at Gamescom 2012), but for some dumb reason the game's first trailer slipped under my radar.

Thankfully, Puppeteer's second trailer--released a few days ago during Tokyo Game Show 2012--was unable to weasel its way by me. Watch it below if you have a thing for amazing-looking games (and, really, who doesn't?).

Sadly, the game doesn't yet have a release date. I'm OK with that, though, as it gives me time to figure out an answer to a question that's been bouncing around in my brain for the last few weeks: Will I or won't I buy a PS3 sometime next year?

For the longest time, my plan was to do just that. Specifically, I was going to pick up one of the new PS3 "Super Slim" systems for a song as well as a slew of games (such as 3D Dot Game Heroes, Journey and Valkyria Chronicles) that I've been drooling over for some time.

What's caused me to question that decision? Three things: 1) Sony's decision to slap a price tag on the "Super Slim" that's higher than the one currently affixed to the previous PS3 revision, 2) the unveiling of the "PINK x WHITE" 3DS LL and 3) the impending release of the Wii U.

Of course, another option would be to wait until the PS4 has hit the streets and then pick up a PS3 on the cheap. Yeah, maybe that's what I'll do...

Wait, you still don't have a PS3?

Oh man, you need to have one. The range of gaming experiences on that console, and the sheer depth to go with it, is unparalleled. Literally the only think the PS3 is missing is Nintendo games, and, well, you have Nintendo consoles, so that proble is solved.

Looks great, but how is this different from Little Big Planet?

Maybe I'm the only person who saw this trailer and thought, "What the hell am I watching and how do I make it stop?!" It was SO busy! Like...give me some kind of context or something...don't just dump me into it and throw all kinds of crazy voices and scene changes and all that at me...

I dunno...it was just too much too fast. I'll wait for more details.

Hey there, Matt! Honestly, I should have bought a PS3 instead of a 360 a few years ago. I can't exactly go back on that decision now, though, so we'll see what happens moving forward. Of course, I could sell my 360, I guess, but I wouldn't exactly make enough from the sale to buy a PS3 at this point, so I'm not sure about that option either.

Regardless, I'll likely pick one up (a PS3, that is) at some point, but I'm not sure when that will be. Like I said in this post, though, it's extremely possible it won't happen until after the PS4 is out (because the PS3 is sure to be pretty cheap by then).

warp: I'm wondering the same thing. It'll be interesting to hear what the answer is to that question. I certainly hope it controls/plays better than LBP, that's for sure...

Justin: No, you're right, it is a busy trailer. Still, I think the graphics look mighty impressive at this point. Hopefully we'll see more of its gameplay soon!

I really don't know if I like "Puppeteer" or not.
It looks kinda cute but also like a Little Big Planet-rip-off.
But I loved playing LBP so maybe I should give it a chance.

I can see where people would think this looks like a LBP rip-off, Melody. Still, it's not like LBP couldn't be improved upon (as far as I'm aware) so, who knows, maybe this will be a better game that LBO was?

Well, I know everyone says this looks like LBP, but personally that game never did anything for me, and Puppeteer DEFINITELY does. It may be a small detail, but I actually really like the narrator! And the idea that everything takes place on the same stage and it changes around the character? Brilliant!

Of course, it's important how the game plays, but I'm of firm believe that if something grabs me as much as Puppeteer does on concept/design alone, it's worth a play whether it is executed well or not.

Sooo... Looks like you and I are the only ones excited for this 'un, Bryan! :p I second everyone urging you to buy a PS3, but I can definitely understand monetary restraints and other priorities. You may want to take into consideration that a PS3 may be slightly more cash up front, but a lot of the games you want to buy are going to be under $20, whereas 3DS LL/Wii U titles will definitely be more expensive than that. Just some food for thought!

Hey there, Anne! I'm with you in feeling/thinking that this game "grabs" me more than LBP ever did. And like you said, the idea that the game takes place on a stage that alters as you go along is really cool.

As for me getting a PS3: It's extremely likely going to get one at some point, but is it going to be next year? I'm not sure. I'll likely keep my eye on what happens with the price of the current PS3 Slim after the Super Slim is released. If a PS3 can be had cheaply enough, who knows? I may get one before I get a Wii U.

I kind of doubt it, though, as right now I'm much more interested in the Wii U and even 3DS XL/LL than the PS3...

On a little side note: I currently am down to PS3 and Wii (plus 3DS) as I just sold the xbox. I think PS3 is great for the occasional interesting game but more so for bluray movies.

Anyways, the game does look impressive and does give a slight LBP vibe (as a side note again hehe I tried LBP for a couple of levels, and I just couldn't understand what the game was on about LOL it just felt pointless to me). But I'm not quite sold on it.

Though I'm doubly surprised that you don't already have a PS3, especially if you are waiting for/wanting Ni No Kuni!! That's coming January.
Now THAT'S a game worth waiting for!!

Hello Igor!

Do you mind me asking: Did you sell your 360 along with all/any digital/downloadable titles (XBLA/XBLIG) you'd bought up to that point? I ask because I'm strongly considering selling my 360 shortly, but I'd like to give the recipient my XBLA/XBLIG games, too, and I'm not sure if I can do that or not...

As for the PS3: Oh, I know it has a good game catalog and that it's good for playing blurays, etc. Also, yes, of course I want to play Ni No Kuni and a bunch of other digital and retail games as well. The thing is, I don't have unlimited income, and to buy 3DS, DS, Wii, 360 and other games (i.e., retro) as well as PS3 games at this point is just too much for me. Which is why I'm considering selling my 360. (Thankfully, I'm *nearly* done buying DS and Wii games, so the budget should open up a bit as soon as I'm fully done with them.)

The xbox money is going towards Wii U preorder :D

I think the only thing I purchased from the xbox shop was DLC for Fable 2 and a fable hat for my avatar (http://avatar.xboxlive.com/avatar/IronSakura/avatarpic-l.png). I'm not really a big game downloader, though I may start downloading stuff on Wii U like Trine 2.

With regards to giving your downloaded stuff away, that would mean relinquishing your XBOX live account completely. You won't be able to use that handle anywhere ever again (and you'd have to change your credit card details etc etc). I think too much hassle for that, unless you're selling it to a family member?

Bryan Ochalla said...

Ugh. Thanks for the help, Igor. Sadly, no, I won't be selling it to a family member, so I guess all of those games will just be lost if I sell the system. At least the person would get a copy of Deadly Premonition, I guess :)

How did you sell yours, BTW? Through eBay, or via some other means?

diaglyph said...

Sold it to a friend of a friend.
I thought I'd try through friends first, and if that didn't work then ebay or some other similar online seller service.

But luckily found a buyer fairly quickly :)

Funny thing is, I didn't give it nary a second thought when I wiped the whole harddrive (as I had an incomplete game save on there for Lost Odyssey - I'll just look it up on youtube LOL)

Bryan Ochalla said...

Thanks for the info, Igor! And, yes, I guess you wouldn't give much thought to wiping your 360's hard since you didn't have much of anything on it :P Maybe I should just keep mine...
