A handful of titillating trailers from this year's Tokyo Game Show

Tokyo Game Show 2013 is underway, and although it hasn't been as thrilling for me as some past events have been, I'd still say it's been all right so far.

Would I still deem it "all right" if Square Enix hadn't used the venue to unveil the first trailer for Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call? Probably not, but since that's really more of a hypothetical question I think we should ignore it for the time being.

Anyway, speaking of Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call, here's the upcoming 3DS title's trailer that I eluded to earlier:

Pretty slick, don't you think? Well, except for that segment (beginning at :50) that shows a bit of the game's multiplayer mode. That was just scary.

Another Tokyo Game Show 2013 trailer that's piqued my interest in the last 24 hours: the one the folks at Capcom produced for their PS4 Dark Souls clone, Deep Down.

Wait, it's not wrong to call Deep DownDark Souls clone, is it? Regardless, I don't mean it in a bad way. The more Dark Souls clones the better, I say. (And, yes, that's coming from someone who's yet to even play the real deal.)

Next up: a teaser trailer for the game that's sure to excite a bunch of Vita owners (yes, all five of them--just kidding), Gravity Daze 2 (aka Gravity Rush 2).

I don't yet own a Vita, of course, but I'm giving serious thought to buying one sometime next year--along with a copy of the first Gravity Rush. And maybe a copy of the sequel, too--assuming it's localized by the time I pick up a Vita, I mean.

Last, but not least, here's a trailer for what I'm guessing is the world's first RPPG (role-playing picross game), Pictlogica: Final Fantasy.

Would you believe me if I told you Pictlogica is a Square Enix production, and that it'll hit an app store (yes, that means it's a mobile affair rather than a 3DS or Vita one) near you ... uh, at some future point in time? Unless you've been living under a rock for the last year or two, I'm willing to bet you would.

Do any (or all, or none) of the trailers above titillate any of you? If so, which ones, and why?

More Gravity Rush sounds good to me. I finally started playing it a little and I'm enjoying it. It'll get more attention after I finish Saints Row 4 and Wind Waker HD... and when Animal Crossing releases its hellish grip on my psyche.

Ah, another Gravity Daze/Rush fan! I wonder, is there a Vita owner out there who doesn't love this game?

As for considering the day when New Leaf releases its grip on your psyche: I second that!

I mean, I knew this was going to be bad, but this bad?!? ;)

I'm generally predisposed to be angry at Capcom, but I have to admit that Monster Hunter 3 is the only game that finally dethroned Animal Crossing, and I'm really liking the look of Deep Down (and the title, very illustrative...reminds me of Deep Dungeon for Famicom). I do hope it's more of an open world like Dark Souls and less episodic than Monster Hunter--we really don't know anything about it yet! Nice demonstration of the (incremental) improvement the PS4 is over the PS3 too, the character's motion looked very natural for what looked like in-game footage.

Gravity rush is one the most underrated games this generation ! This game is absolutely Amazing. From the beautiful art direction to the perfectly fitting soundtrack to the simple but exhilarating gameplay It's a shame how the media and ignorant treat it : (

Sigh. You've just reminded me that I *really* need to pick up MH3U sometime soon, Jeremy. Maybe I'll get it for my birthday? Anyway, I really want to give it a go, as I've heard wonderful things about the series from people who've played it quite a bit.

As for Deep Down: I'm sad to say I don't know much about it at this point other than it's for the PS4 and looks very Dark Souls-esque. Are there rumblings that it'll be episodic like MH? That would seem strange to me, in a way...

Hmmm, I don't know about the media treating it poorly, Billy--I've read tons and tons of rave reviews of it since it was released. Sadly, I think it has more to do with the Vita just being too niche of a device at the moment. I mean, you can only talk about or hype up a game on a system that isn't owned by that many people (outside of Japan, especially) so much, if you ask me. Anyway, I'm glad to hear you've enjoyed the game so far. Hopefully I'll be able to join in soon :)

I think you'd like it! It seems really opaque and intimidating when you first get into it, but it's simpler than it seems once you're past the learning curve. I'm a lance-user 4 lyfe.

Oh, it was just baseless speculation on my part...there does seem to be some sort of modern day or futuristic framing device in Deep Down though, so I'm wondering if maybe the dark souls-esque parts are just some computer simulation that the player revisits at different times? I GUESS I could just wait a little bit and find out what it's really about, but I like to make wild guesses too.

I also think Capcom got some influence from Demon/Dark Soul for Deep Down but I'm thinking they also got some influence from their own Dragon's Dogma and Monster Hunter. The fight with the dragon towards the end of the trailer made me think of a Monster Hunter that looks more designed to appeal to western audience. They probably also got influence from WRPGs. Also is it just me or does Capcom really like putting English voice acting in their Japanese games. I wonder if they'll get a Japanese rock band to preform a song in English like with Dragon's Dogma.

I'm really glad I didn't get the first Theatrythm since the squeal seems to have all the songs from the first. As for that other Final fantasy game, I can see it being ported to the 3DS at some point due to the way it has the screen split like that.

As for the the Team Gravity trailer, having not played Gravity Rush yet,the fact it appears to be a teaser, and the fact I have yet to get a Vita I'm finding it hard to form an opinion on it. Since the 2nd half of this year has been draining my money with family stuff and with the holidays coming up I can't imagine my video game budget increasing suddenly by the end of the year so I'm trying to not get excited over games for systems I don't have yet.

MH3U is currently on sale for 50% off until the 22nd.

Yes, you're probably right about Deep Down being inspired by Monster Hunter, too. Capcom certainly seems to be trying to expand interest in MH-like games, especially outside of Japan, what with DD and Gaist Crusher for 3DS.

As for Pictlogica being ported to 3DS eventually: I sure hope you're right! I mean, it looks a little shallow at the moment, but I'd still like to experience it.

Finally, I'm with you in not getting too excited about games for systems you don't yet own. I don't quite live by that tile myself, sadly, but I wish I did! :)

Thanks, Jeremy. And I think I'd like it, too. I've just been a bit intimidated by it so far.

I didn't know there was a modern-day element to DD, by the way. How interesting! I guess I'll have to do a bit more research on this one...

Yep, I knew that, but thanks for the reminder anyway. I'm probably going to pass on it, unfortunately, but I have a feeling I'll ask my parents to get me the game for my birthday, which is just a few months away :)

An other thing about Deep Down. I know it's been said before but it's a real looker.

thegaygamer.com said...

Oh, yes, of course. That's probably its defining trait at the moment, if you ask me :)

TGS this year is a little too bland in my opinion.. The only thing "new" that caught my eye is Over my dead Body 2. Expectations from Square Enix aside, I was actually hoping for P5 and the new Tales of games which apparently is far from ready, especially the former. As for Deep down, well, I will wait for the game to be out before I decide to get it or not.. Also, even though gamers are condemning Capcom, some developers think that they are going to the right directions in this western dominated gaming era..

On a side note, gamers who wants to taste real addictive despair shall really really try demon souls series.. Its like a baptism for ultimate RPG gamer in this decade.. Lol.. And They gave very very memorable moments, from comical relieve through words given by other ghostly players, awesome music scores, victories that strokes your ego, to controller smashing rage..
And every single time when I go up to a dungeon boss, my hair will stand on end, my muscle tightens and the adrenaline starts pumping.. No games, will give me this kind of sensation ever.. Oh dear.. its enough to make me shiver just by thinking about it.. Hahahaha...

Anyway, its a super brutal and fun game.. Though, I will say that I am taking a long break from it.. Because as much as I enjoy it this game really scars me..
