Guess what? I'm (back) on Tumblr, too...

Because I apparently hate having any free time whatsoever, I recently decided to start making use of the tumblr--TheGayGamer, aka gaygamer.tumblr.com--I launched ages ago and then promptly dropped like a hot potato.

I'll be honest: at the moment, I'm mostly turning to it to help promote posts that are published here, but I'm also regularly favoriting and passing along others' posts that I find particularly interesting or that are in line with the kind of content I tend to produce.

Well, except for the not-safe-for-work stuff (that I favorite or pass along, not that I publish myself)--which you may want to watch out for if you aren't into bara and the like.

One more thing: if you're on tumblr, or if you follow any tumblrs you think I'd enjoy (NSFW or otherwise), let me know in the comments section below.

I dunno, I can't think of any.

Are you being facetious, Steve--as in, this is a sly way of suggesting that I follow your Tumblr? If so, it worked!

Actually, I would've thought I was already following you, but considering how new I am to Tumblr, I guess I shouldn't be surprised to learn I've yet to follow a few folks.

Anyway, if you weren't being facetious, I'm sorry for suggesting you were :)

Of course -- I am full of feces! And while you're at it, be sure you're following mechattack, fuckyeahchoaniki and pixelclash. That should keep you busy enough.

Thanks for the heads up, Steve. I appreciate it!

Yeah, Tumblr really didn't work out for me. Too many crazy extreme political opinions over there, and too much temptation to shoot my big mouth off and make trouble for myself. It's a shame, really, because it is how I met Steve and (I think) we're still on good terms.

That surprises me, Jess. Not that you ended up being
exasperated by Tumblr, mind you, but that you found it overly political. Almost
all of the people I currently follow publish photos or images and that's it—as in,
they rarely, if ever, include text in their posts. Or did you come across a lot
of people who published photos/images that were political in an off-putting (to
put it mildly) way?

Hey there, Inganno! Yes, I'm definitely already following VGMMG and TC. I don't believe I'm following the other two, though, so I'll add them ASAP. I'm sad to hear that GG has slowed down in recent months, though, as I used to really enjoy checking out that site.

As for Tumblr content being heavily NSFW and also unquestionably hit-and-miss (especially in terms of how often sites are updated, or how long the people who started them continue to publish to them), I can't disagree with you there. Of course, the same is true of blogs and other social-media sites, in my experience. You basically just have to appreciate a site as long as it's around and then accept it when inevitably it stops being updated, sadly enough.

Well, there was that, sure. But I've found that posts you don't want to read tend to reach you anyway because of the way Tumblr is designed. If a friend of a friend of a friend posts or re-posts something idiotic, it shows up in your feed. Then you're tempted to read it, and even worse, tempted to respond to it, and that always ends badly.

In way of example, someone posted the lovely opinion that you should steal from retail stores as a form of civil disobedience, ignoring the facts that insurance protects these companies from such theft and that the consequences to YOU are far more severe if you're caught. That... did not sit well with me. Tumblr's admins claimed that the post was deleted, but posts on the site spread like wildfire from page to page, making it impossible to remove them completely.

There were just a lot of things that happened to me on Tumblr that soured me on the site. I posted some dumb angry rant about a video game once and people swarmed en masse to shame me for it, as if I was clubbing baby harp seals. That pack mentality and the almost comical sanctimony of Tumblr members (typically naive, left-leaning children with more rage than common sense) convinced me that my time could be better spent elsewhere.

I might have been able to get more mileage out of the site if I had pruned my watch list, but I feel like I've already burned my bridges there, and have no great urge to return.

Oh, my! Well, based on what you said here, Jess, I can understand why you aren't exactly champing at the bit to return to Tumblr.

For me, I'm currently enjoying meeting some new people and learning about some new topics via Tumblr.

Of course, I'm all over the place when it comes to social media. I divide my attention among blogs (including yours!), Facebook, Flickr, Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr at the moment, and there are aspects of each that I like and dislike. As long as that remains true, I'll continue to check out all of them :)

You're absolutely right. It's a weird sort of cycle for social media in general. But in any case it's still a lot of fun, especially meeting new people and seeing the lives they live. It makes me wonder what the next big thing to come around will be in the world of social media.

TheGameroomBlitz said...

By the way, you were going to recommend some other blogs to me, right? Kind of running dry on things to read.

thegaygamer.com said...

Ah, yes, let me think for a few minutes and get back to you, Jess. To be honest, I don't follow as many blogs these days as I used to!

thegaygamer.com said...

Oh, yes, I see it as being part positive and part negative, too, Inganno. I guess sometimes I focus on the negative, though, because I really fall in love with some blogs, for instance, and it's sad when the people running them stop updating them for whatever reason.

I'm "not" on tumblr. At least not in the capacity I was before. With the collapse of my last one, I don't feel the need to get involved, but I'll look for your updates.

thegaygamer.com said...

I can't blame you, Justin. That said, if you're still on Tumblr in some capacity and check in from time to time, you'll probably see some things on my Tumblr that I don't publish elsewhere. Most of the time it'll be someone else's stuff that I favorite or otherwise pass along, but who knows, maybe I'll publish some original stuff there, too?
