How could I forget about Captain Rainbow?

Did you forget that a fan translation is being created for Captain Rainbow? I sure did. Thankfully, a recent post over at GoNintendo reminded me of it.

Sadly, although it sounds as if said translation--which I believe will released as a patch, à la last year's Fatal Frame IV fan translation--is coming along nicely, it also sounds as if it won't see the light of day anytime soon.



To help make the wait more bearable, the folks at Kirameki recently uploaded the video above--which shows off their translated intro for this Skip Ltd.-developed game--to YouTube.

Sweet! I had no idea that anyone was working on this. It's a travesty that we never got this one here in the States, especially because it's almost as Nintendo-nostalgic as Smash bros. I was looking forward to this one in particular for just being different, so I guess I can start looking forward to it once again,

Yes, Drew, start looking forward to it once again -- especially since the translation looks pretty good at this point (if the YT video I included in the post is any indication).

Anyway, hopefully it'll be out sooner rather than later -- although I'll obviously wait as long as I have to :)

Hmmm. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't one of the levels in Captain Rainbow is to find a "Certain" item in Birdo's bedroom?

You're right, anonymous! And if you brought that up because you think it's one of the many reasons NOA and NOE passed on the game, I have to say I agree with you. Another reason, I think, is that the game features a few characters that starred in games that were never released outside of Japan (Mappo from GiFTPiA, Hikari from Shin Onigashima, Lip from Panel de Pon and more).

I agree that the prospect of Birdo owning a dildo (or vibrator or whatever other indicator of femininity you may want to imagine) could have helped prevent Captain Rainbow from making it to the U.S., but it's worth pointing out that there's a similar scene in Super Mario RPG, when Mario find's Peach's ??? item. It's never described beyond that nonsense string, but based on the way Peach acts, it could easily be something embarrassing.

I agree with you, too, Drew -- that NOA/NOE could have gotten around that particular hurdle if they'd so desired. I actually think the unknown characters may have played the biggest role in keeping the game from coming to our shores -- along with NOA's/NOE's general discomfort with trying to promote/release niche titles this generation.

How very interesting! I love a fan translation! Nothing puts the message out there better that Nintendo is failing to localize games that we WANT! They're incredibly good, unfortunately, at ignoring that message.

They are, aren't they, Justin? It would be funny if it weren't so sad. I mean, here we are, in the middle of a huge dry spell in terms of NA Wii releases, and NOA is sitting on a huge pile of games that have been or will be translated into English for Euro gamers.

Speaking of which, did you hear that The Last Story and Pandora's Tower will be released sometime next year in Europe? I think I'm going to buy the latter title, actually -- along with Inazuma Eleven for the DS, which comes out soon...

Really? I've been looking at mod sites...just thinking more seriously about homebrewing. Damn NOA.

Yes, really. Like you said, damn NOA.

BTW, I think you should stop thinking about homebrewing your Wii and go ahead with it. The 'letterbomb' method I mentioned a while back is supposed to be both simple and foolproof, so there's no reason not to -- even if you never buy Xenoblade or Pandora's Tower or any other import title.
