I enjoyed this 3DS XL unboxing video a lot more than I should've

With the launch of the 3DS XL/LL just a few weeks away for those living in Europe and Japan--the rest of us schmucks won't be able to get our hands on this humungous handheld until Aug. 19--I guess it shouldn't be a surprise to hear that Nintendo's already sending them to game journalists in the aforementioned territories.

Also not surprising: A number of said journalists are filming and sharing "unboxing videos" of their shiny new systems.

The one below (and here), made by someone at CVG, caught my attention due, in large part, to its "Quiet Storm" soundtrack.

Two thoughts that came to mind while I watched the video above: 1) Man, that box is small! 2) Man, that manual is huge! Oh, and one more: Man, if someone makes a similar video of the all-white Japanese 3DS LL, I may just faint. (Just in case any of you are wondering: No, I don't actually say or think "man" as often as the sentences above suggest.)

Should CVG's sexy unboxing video not satisfy your need for 3DS XL/LL news, maybe Eurogamer's first impressions of the soon-to-be-released system will do the trick?

My favorite line of the above-mentioned write-up, surprisingly enough: "I always felt the original 3DS hinge was a little wobbly, see, so I was pleased to discover that the XL's hinge has a lot less give to it. You can click the screen into a few positions, and whatever angle you choose, it's much harder to accidentally shake it out of position."

That's it. I give in. I'm getting one. Clearly I have no self control?

I'll just give my current 3DS to my husband or something. Either way someone will be playing with it.

Ha! I love it, Frank. You remind me so much of myself it's hilarious. I've been going through the same thing with the 3DS XL. One day, I'm all, "Eh, I don't like how it looks. No way I'm getting one anytime soon." The next day, I'm like, "Oh, it's so big! And much sleeker (in a way) than the regular 3DS. I want one now!!!"

Thankfully, there's no way in hell I'm buying one of the red or blue ones that'll be released at launch in the US. I'm holding out for a pink one -- or maybe an all-white one, should they be released in the US at some point :P

Yeah. It's great to that there's someone else I can talk to about this silly back and forth internal battle. Lol I think I just needed to get that out because now I've flipped back again. I really, really want a white one. It bugs me that my current 3DS doesn't match my iPhone.

See I could settle for a blue one which is the tough part about this decision. :-/

I like the tougher hinge thing. That's a definite improvement. That being said, I'm still not on board with the whole XL thing...but I'll accept it.

And what's the deal with unboxing videos? I feel like I'm missing some essential gene that makes them totally unattractive to me. They have never done anything for me, for some reason.

I hear ya on the unboxing thing Justin. It's...weird. Especially when there are thousands of them on YouTube. I think the attractive thing about this XL unboxing is we haven't seen much of the device "in the wild". Plus they showed some shots of it with its regular-sized older brother. Man, that thing is big.

Oh, Frank, you've really got it bad, don't you? You've flipped back again? Ha! I can understand your reasoning, though. All-white is much better than those horrid red-black or blue-black combos, IMO. Anyway, I look forward to hearing from you in a few days -- when you're sure to change your mind again :P

Justin: I hear you about the unboxing video thing. That's why I wrote the headline I did -- I normally can't stand unboxing videos, but this one appealed to me for whatever reason. I'm going to blame it on the "Quiet Storm" soundtrack :)

Bryan Ochalla said...

Frank: Yeah, there's that, too. Some of the previous videos of the XL in the wild weren't all that attractive, IMO. This one was like showing it on a catwalk, IMO :) As for it being big: I guess. Actually, I think it looks surprisingly smaller than I had imagined!

I'm strongly resisting the "That's what he said" joke for that last line Bryan but yeah... I've got it bad. Luckily I've got a great husband that keeps me grounded. He knows how to talk sense into me.

But you're right, I will probably change my mind again in a couple days. lol

Bryan Ochalla said...

Ha! Frank, would you believe that my husband and I say, "That's what he said," all the time? Yes, we're that lame :P

You're lucky that you have a husband who can talk some sense into you, BTW. I have one, too, but he never talks any sense into me when it comes to games. Of course, that's because I rarely tell him about my gaming purchases :)

Frank Fuentes said...

Lol Yeah we're pretty lame too. So you're not alone there!

Yeah I remember talking to you about your husband over Twitter. I think I should do the same and not tell mine about some of my gaming purchases...but then that could lead to all kinds of new things popping up in the apartment such as a new 3DS... Especially when it's got a stronger hinge, 90% bigger screens, better 3D, better battery life and comes with a limited edition flying unicorn.

Frank: Oh, I don't necessarily hide my gaming purchases from my husband. Actually, I do the opposite most of the time. I'm sure this will sound weird, but we both get an allowance for the year that can be spent on anything we like (although I guess he'd blanch at drugs and hookers!). I, of course, tend to spend the bulk of my allowance $$$ on games -- which the hubs isn't allowed to complain about. Isn't it great?

Frank Fuentes said...

The allowance thing isn't weird at all. It actually sounds like a great idea. :)

Bryan Ochalla said...

My husband is very -- how should I say this? -- "concerned with money." Which is a good thing, really, as it means we'll likely be able to retire, we can continue enjoy living in our house, etc. On the other hand, it can be a bit ... exasperating. Anyway, we agreed to the allowance thing a few years ago in order to stop arguing about money, and it's worked really well for us. I can buy whatever the hell I want with my portion, and he can buy whatever the hell he wants with his portion. No more arguing!

OK, so now I've shared some oddly personal information on my blog. Oh, well, most people probably won't even read this comment :)

Ha. I suppose it's my fault we veered off into talking about other things than the 3DS XL's unboxing video. Hearing how other people, especially other gay couples, deal with gaming related spending is nice because it's an expensive form of entertainment. We pay hundreds of dollars for these devices so we can continue paying a fraction of that cost per month to play new games. It's probably equally exasperating for non-gamers to be in a relationship with us because that scenario wouldn't make any sense to them. But, it's good to have people like that with us because we gamers can be easily excitable when it comes to new stuff. Some of us, particularly people like me, lack the will power and self control to keep themselves from making frivolous purchases. If we're being honest, the 3DS XL is exactly that kind of purchase if you already own one.

Anyway, I really admire how you both found a way to compromise. And you're right, I'm sure most people won't even read that comment. lol

Bryan Ochalla said...

Eh, I'm not worried even if people do read these last few comments. As long as I'm not sharing my social security number or something, I don't mind sharing personal info here.

Anyway, you're right that the XL could be considered a frivolous purchase if you already own a 3DS. That said, I don't think it's completely frivolous. I mean, those larger screens *are* quite impressive, and if the 3D effect is less "touchy" while using the XL than the regular 3DS, well, that's a big deal, too.

Of course, I could just be saying that because I want to make myself feel better about a possible future XL purchase :P

Frank Fuentes said...

I think it's best we try to hold out for the color options we both want. The big screens and better 3D effects can wait. I actually haven't even been using the 3D much lately.

Bryan Ochalla said...

I agree. Plus, I didn't get the color I wanted when I got my regular 3DS, and I now regret it. This time, I'm waiting until I get what I want! In a way, I hope Japan gets a pink XL first, as I really want to buy a Japanese 3DS to go along w/ my American 'regular' one -- you know, so I can play imports and stuff.

As for not using the 3D aspect of the 3DS: I'm with you there, Frank. I rarely use it these days. I actually think the effect is cool, but I don't like how easy it is to 'ruin' it (by moving the system a bit, etc.). Also, it tends to make me feel like I'm going to get a migraine, which definitely isn't cool. So, I usually stick with non-3D play.

Frank Fuentes said...

Omg we are very much alike because I did the same thing when I got my 3DS! I wanted a purple one but I went a day too early and they refused to sell me one. Rather then come back the next day I just got a blue one and I've regretted it ever since. That should probably make me more determined to wait for a white one.

That's precisely the reason why I keep it off. Kind of sad but oh we'll. The games still look amazing without the 3D.

Bryan Ochalla said...

Oh, you almost got a purple one? I can't believe you accepted a blue one instead! Anyway, yes, hopefully this will help you stay strong and only accept the exact color you want when it comes to the XL :)
