Six Japanese PSP games I wish had been brought to the States

Considering how poorly the PSP sold in the US, it's pretty amazing how many Japanese games have been localized and brought to our shores since it debuted in 2005. (In fact, they're still coming--as evidenced by the recent announcements concerning Class of Heroes 2 and Sweet Fuse: At Your Side.)

Still, a number of noteworthy PSP titles never earned an English release of any sort. Of those, the six mentioned below are the ones I most wish had made it to North America.

1. 7th Dragon 2020--Truth be told, I'd much rather be able to buy and play a localized copy of the original 7th Dragon (for the DS) than this "side story," but that doesn't mean I wouldn't pick up 2020 if given the chance--despite the fact that the crew at Hardcore Gaming 101 have described it as being "significantly dumbed down" compared to its predecessor.

2. Any of the Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA games--I'm a sucker for rhythm games, especially those that could be called "cute," so this Sega-made selection is a no-brainer. That said, I have a feeling this game would have been ruined had its developers attempted to replace its Japanese tunes with English ones, so maybe I should be happy it never left its home country.

3. Either of the MonHun Diary: Poka Poka Airu Village titles--This series (consisting of just two games, at the moment) often is described as being "Monster Hunter meets Animal Crossing," which of course means I've been curious about it since the first title was announced in 2009. Considering Sony seemed desperate for a while to expand western sales of the PSP (and Capcom similarly seemed desperate to expand western interested in the Monster Hunter series), I thought one or both of the MonHun Diary: Poka Poka Airu Village would be shoe-ins for a US release of some sort. Apparently I thought wrong.

4. Nayuta No Kiseki--Full disclosure: I know next to nothing about Falcom's Eiyū Densetsu (The Legend of Heroes) series, to which this game is related. So why do I want to play Nayuta No Kiseki? Because it looks completely awesome, that's why. Thankfully, it seems like the type of game that could be enjoyed by someone who doesn't understand a lick of Japanese, so I won't whine about this one too much.

5. Ore no Shikabane o Koete Yuke--I've been curious about this title ever since I first heard about the PSone original, which was released (only in Japan, naturally) in 1999. The reason: it begins with a demon cursing the offspring of some "legendary hero" with an affliction that causes him and his children (and his children's children, etc.) to age 50 times faster than usual, according to rpgfan.com. The point of the game, then, is to find and defeat the aforementioned demon and rid your family of the also-previously-discussed curse. Pretty cool, eh?

6. Yūsha 30 Second--Although I've yet to put any real time into Half-Minute Hero, I'd still pick up a copy of this 2011 sequel if an English version were made available--mainly because of all of the positive reviews I've read of the original. Actually, I'd pick up two copies if this served as the North American release's box art.

Note: I originally intended to include Final Fantasy Type-0 on this list, but in the end I decided against it because my explanation would have consisted of a single word: "duh."

Holy crap, they all look great. Shame being region-free doesn't help with the whole "in Japanese" thing.

OMG, there are tons of Japanese PSP titles I wish we got to see here. But anyone who knows me would probably not be surprised to hear that hack//Link is at the top of my list, since I played and loved all 7 of the PS2 games. Yes I know I'm a freak.

BTW I've actually played a bit Ore no Shikabane o Koete Yuke and made some gifs for it (http://obscurevideogames.tumblr.com/tagged/Ore-no-Shikabane-wo-Koete-Yuke). It's got a nice style to it, but not sure it's as great as everybody seems to think. Did you know there's actually an "Operation Demon Bane" dedicated to bringing it to the US?

I hear ya, Simon. Really, the only game discussed in this post that could be easily enjoyed by folks who don't understand Japanese is Project DIVA, I think. Sigh.

Well, you balance me out when it comes to the 'hack' games, Simon, as I've never played a single one! I'm guessing you'd recommend them? If so, which one is your favorite?

As for Ore no Shikabane: have you played the PSone or PSP version? I ask because the link you shared here seems to be busted.

Anyway, even if the game isn't as great as some have made it out to be, I'm still interested in playing it someday--the PSone version especially, of course.

Oh, and as for folks trying to bring it here: that's great, although I have a feeling they're wasting their time given what Victor Ireland has said about his attempts to bring the PSone version to our shores.

It's Steve not Simon! :>

Anyhow, I'm not surprised you never played .hack; I know most "serious" gamers tend to look down on the series in disdain. It was basically 2 games, but the 1st one was split into 4 parts, and the second one ("GU") had 3 parts. I thought the first series was a little more fun, but the second series was technically the better game in terms of graphics and depth. I guess it was the crazy/unique story line and characters really hooked me.

Here's a working link for Over My Dead Body:

I've only played the PSP version as nobody seems to have an iso for the PS1 version. Kind of a shame, because PS1 gifs would've looked way better, I'm sure. But if you can get a PSP emulator working, it's definitely worth a shot just to see what you're missing out on.

Oops, sorry Steve :| I'd just responded to Simon before responding to you, and I guess the pair of five-letter names starting with 's' tripped me up.

Thanks for the info about the .hack series. I don't know much about it, to be honest, so I guess I'll have to do some digging soon!

I'm kind of shocked to hear that ISOs of the PS1 version of Ore no Shikabane are impossible to find at the moment. Anyway, yes, I really like the looks of that version. The PSP versions looks nice as well, of course, but I prefer the original for various reasons.

I remember reading about Nayuta No Kiseki in Famitsu, and desparately hoping it released westward. Unfortunately I just knew it wouldn't be. I guess I should just nab it off the Japanese PSN and deal with my shaky Japanese.

thegaygamer.com said...

Not sure this will help any, Matt, but it seems you don't need to know much (if any) Japanese to enjoy this one. So, I say you should nab it off of the Japanese PSN :)

Nayuta no Kiseki is one of my favorite PSP games, but you probably already knew that already.

What you might not have known is that the Project Diva series is also another favorite of mine! I love the catchy tunes that Miku + friends sing, and the second game in the series is a huge improvement over the first. And even then, the first game was VERY good.

I'm also extremely pumped for the next game in the series, Project Diva F. I decided to skip on the Vita version (which has a lowercase f in the name) since the PS3 release has a handful of additional songs. It's coming out in a few days, so I can't wait to get my grubby little hands on it!

thegaygamer.com said...

Hey there, Espiga! Oh, yes, I knew you liked Nayuta--your great review of the game over at Unlimited Zig is what turned me onto the game :)

I didn't know that you like the Project Diva series, though. You're the second (or third?) person to tell me that the second PSP game is the best of the bunch, though, so I guess I should go with that one if ever I decide to import one of them?

I had completely forgotten about Diva F until you mentioned it, BTW. I knew all about Diva f (Vita), of course, but forgot about the PS3 version.

Anyway, I'll look forward to hearing what you think of it after you finally get to play it :)

Oh Bryan I would kill to get a european version of MonHun Diary: Poka Poka Airu Village, Miku Project Diva/ Project Mirai for 3DS and the Persona 1 remake... :(

retr0gamer said...

I just want the other Legend of Heroes games. Then I can die happy.

thegaygamer.com said...

You and me both, Lizzi :( For a short while, I thought MonHun Diary would come to Europe, NA or both. Guess I was wrong. I'm also kind of surprised Sega (or someone else) didn't bring Project Mirai to the west. I would've bought a copy Sega! Doesn't that mean anything? Guess not :|

thegaygamer.com said...

Oh! I completely forgot about those :| Yeah, I feel for people who loved the one that made it out of Japan, as now they're all desperately sad that the rest didn't follow.

Lizzi said...

What did you expect? Of course it doesn't means anything to them. NA and Eu are not worth the effort.

thegaygamer.com said...

I know, but I can't help but wish otherwise :(

Lizzi said...

Yeah :/ Me too...

Who knows, maybe they'll surprise us someday :|
