Here's hoping the SaGa game for Vita looks more interesting than the browser-based Imperial SaGa

I don't know about you, but I'd completely forgotten than the folks at Square Enix are working on a browser-based SaGa game--called Imperial SaGa--as well as one for the Vita.

After watching Imperial SaGa's first trailer, below, I have a feeling that game would be better off forgotten, actually.

OK, so that's not completely fair, as Imperial SaGa looks to have at least a couple of redeemable qualities. For instance, I like some of the enemy designs, and some of the attacks look appropriately bonkers.

I can't say I'm all that impressed with the rest of it, though--with the character sprites being a prime example. For me, these creations just don't hold a candle to the ones Square Enix's (or, rather, Squaresoft's) staffers produced during the Super Famicom and PlayStation eras.

Anyway, I still have somewhat high hopes for the Vita SaGa game--although, really, who knows when we'll finally get a look at that one, let alone be given the chance to play the finished product?

With that said, what do all of you think of this first Imperial SaGa trailer? Do you think it stinks, or do you think it smells like freshly baked chocolate chip cookies (which, for me, is a decidedly positive thing)?

I've never played a SaGa game. If this were my first exposure to it, I might be okay. Those enemies look pretty interesting...but the player sprites look ugly as hell.

Really, Justin? You didn't play any of the Final Fantasy Legend games back in the day? If you did, they're actually the first SaGa games! After that, though, they rarely made an appearance outside of Japan, with SaGa Frontier I and II on the PlayStation and the remake of Romancing SaGa for the PS2 being the only exceptions. I love SaGa Frontier, BTW--even though it's got all kinds of issues :)

Player sprites looks like poo :(
This isn't my pretty SaGa, not at all :(

Wish I could win like a gazillion dollars so I could fund a SaGa with Child of Lights engine with the art as intact as possible. And just after that I'll fund a remake of all SaGa games to PSV so o can play it on the global well....:(

Yeah, the character
sprites definitely aren’t that great, Franggio. In fact, they look awfully
similar to the character sprites that appear in SE's recent Final Fantasy
mobile remakes--which I also detest.

Still, I have *some* amount of hope that
the Vita game will look better than any of these games. Personally, I hope the
Vita SaGa mixes sprites and polygons a la the first SaGa Frontier, but I have a
feeling it'll be an all-polygon affair.

In that case, it would be great if it
utilizes a really unique art style—like, maybe a paper-cut-out style in the
vein of Paper Mario, or a cell-shaded one in the style of Okami or the new Ore
no Shikabane title. Just as long as it doesn't look like the PS2 remake of
Romancing SaGa!

Ohh, that would be great. Ore no Shikabane wis really pretty :)
Well I have faith that SE can make it beautiful.... But That is only if they actually go in for it. Since yeah...If anyone haven't seen it it's in the trailer above :( all that art to just muck it up with those sprites. And as for the FFVI mobile remake... I'm Honestly in disbelief when I see people say that they prefer that look :|

Oh, I hear you,
Franggio. I think the mobile port/remake of FFVI is a travesty. These
"new" sprites the designers at SE are coming up with these days lack
a lot of the personality that was showcased in the sprites that were produced
in the 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit eras, in my opinion.

Yes, you're right. SE still can make games that ooze charm, and they can make them using polygons or sprites. Just look at The 4 Heroes of Light for DS, which is one of the system's most charming games, IMO. Also, The World Ends With You, if you're looking for sprite-based games. Whichever teams handle their mobile efforts, though...
