Checking in on Captain Rainbow's English translation

To all of you who forgot that someone was even working on an English fan-translation of the skip-developed, Nintendo-published oddity known as Captain Rainbow: No worries, I forgot, too.

Now that you've been reminded, though, you'd probably like to hear how things are going with said fan-translation, right?

Well, according to an update that was posted to kirameki.altervista.org on Jan. 15, the project is back on course after taking a couple of wrong turns over the last few months.

Along with that hopeful message, the folks at Kirameki also shared on their site a new trailer, above, which highlights some of the progress they've made in translating this fabulous (in all senses of the word) Wii title.

Here's hoping that their good fortune continues and that they can get this long-awaited (by me, at least) patch out before the Wii U replaces the Wii as my go-to console.

Hoping this gets completed eventually. I've only played Chibi Robo by the same company but really loved it especially how charming it was.

I hope they finish it, too, Retr0gamer. It certainly looks interesting -- both in terms of graphics and content.

I kept waiting for some action...but...no. It looks like it has a good sense of humor, at least.

In other news you reminded me that I need Chibi Robo on the DS :)

I'm pretty sure there *are* action sequences in this game, Justin -- when you turn into Captain Rainbow, as far as I'm aware.

I have to admit, though, that the video posted here doesn't make the game seem all that exciting. Maybe the folks working on the translation wanted to focus on the translation work they've done? That's what I'm hoping, at least...

Retr0gamer: Ah, yes, Chibi Robo! I still need to buy the GC version myself. I played it a loooooong time ago, but I've never owned it. Sigh.

I really want this, but probably not enough to deal with all the hoops you have to go thru to buy it and install the patch.

I've read that the Fatal Frame 4 patch, which is supposed to be similar to this one, was easy enough to accomplish. Acquiring the game is probably the biggest challenge. I wonder what it goes for these days? Guess I should look it up if I want to play this one eventually...

I found TheBitBlock's glowing review of Captain Rainbow. Kinda long but very passionate. The reviewer goes over all of the obscure Nintendo characters and the game play. It definitely looks cool! Seems like there's almost an animal crossing vibe to part of the game.

Yeah I've heard the Fatal Frame 4 patch is pretty painless as well. Although I haven't actually read up on what you have to do lol

Fatal Frame for goes for a lot of money on ebay at the moment. If you really want to play the game then I'm sure you'll be able to download an iso of the game that's pre-patched, just like with Fatal Frame 4. Not that I condone this but tbh if you do buy Captain Rainbow or Fatal Frame 4 at the moment the only way is through second hand sellers so the money isn't going to the developers. I'd buy both games if Nintendo released them but nintendo don't like my money.

Oh, I didn't realize TheBitBlock had reviewed Captain Rainbow, Kaze. Thanks for pointing it out! I'll have to watch it in a bit. Also, an Animal Crossing-ish vibe would be fine by me!

Hey there, Retr0gamer: Oh, yeah, I know Fatal Frame 4 goes for a lot on eBay these days. I was wondering about Captain Rainbow. I'll bet that's a bit pricey, too. Anyway, you're right that I'm sure an ISO will be made available shortly after the patch is released. I can't say I'm completely against downloading such a thing myself as, like you said, the money spent on copies of FF4 and/or Captain Rainbow at this point isn't going to the devs/publishers. Also, like you, I'd have bought both of these games in a heartbeat if Nintendo had decided to release them here.
